Last night I noticed that my scroll wheel lost some of it's smoothness, and a soft, inconsistent, "bumpy" feeling had begun to develop. Upon closer inspection, a thick-ish ring of dirt had manifested around the circumference of one side of the wheel, presumably accumulated from my middle finger resting there for prolonged periods of time.
I opened up the mouse, popped the scrollwheel out, and wiped off both the wheel and its axle with a soft cloth. Put it back together, and it scrolls great again. Maybe not quite as smoothly as it did when I first took it out of the box (I may have removed some grease or something), but it's still extremely smooth. I'm happy.
This thing is ridiculously easy to open up and service. Just take unscrew the three screws on the bottom and you have access to everything. I'm actually surprised... but I guess I shouldn't be.

DankkIf you cleaned the scroll wheel axle, you probably removed some grease that would prevent long-term wear. It appears the factory applied a white lithium-type grease, but Vaseline or silicone grease will probably work about as well; just take care not to get any on the scroll barrel itself, nor on the rubber tires it turns.
