Support for Alternative Layouts
This is a summary of how alternative layouts have been supported by kits such as Colevrak and Homing. It is not a discussion of alt layout performance and development, but if that interests you I highly recommend starting with Pascal Getreuer’s A guide to alt keyboard layouts (why, how, which one?). It’s a concise and comprehensive overview with links to some great sites that go deeper. He also has a separate Links about keyboards page. The Keyboard layouts doc he recommends explains layout goals and metrics in detail, summarizing the alt layouts discussed here as well as more than one hundred others. Sculpted-profile The majority of custom keycap sets are sculpted-profile (Cherry, SA, MT3, KAT, etc. - more on profiles generally here) so let’s start there. Because each row has a unique keycap shape, alt layouts require a unique keycap for each legend that moves off its QWERTY row. Well i don't know, i'll pass and wait for the next Ducky with Kailh switches, might be good but doesn't feel right for me :-(
It worked perfectly for about 6 months, then it started developing USB issues, the hub (which I never used) stopped working, and the keyboard stopped detecting upon reboots.
It needed to be unplugged and replugged _multiple_ times after each reboot for it to detect. It did the same thing on multiple PCs.
It went back for warranty exchange, and guess what, it came back with all the same issues, and the addition of a 2 to 1 USB adapter, which did nothing to solve the problem. I've long since consigned it to the pile of shame.
There are so many other established and reputable manufacturers making mechanical keyboards now, do yourselves a favor and shop around first.
A couple of month ago when this keyboard arrived on their webpage to make people curious they had forgotten to mention about the clone switches and now livingspeedbump told the same in his review:
"It should be mentioned that nowhere on the box, or on the inside instructions is “Greetech” mentioned by name, with “Brown Switch” being the only name used to describe the switches anywhere."
This is a bullshit behaviour and don't try to fool me, they always mentioned before on other products Cherry MX Switches, they're pros and know exactly what they are doing from my point of view.
The high point of this keyboard was definitely how it performed in a real working environment. My office mates loved this keyboard for its functionality, and I am happy to recommend this to people looking to use it for that. Many of those people couldn't care less about the switches, but it still does get to me a little.
I really do love the overall idea of this keyboard. Unique styling, USB ports, the hilarious, yet somehow badass ruler on the bottom, but with a few changes it could really be a class act keyboard.
USB 3.0 - Cherry/Gateron Switches - Removable Cable - hell yes.
