If you get the Aeon RT ("re-tuned") direct from danclarkaudio.com they are the same price, $499. You can choose to get open back or closed back, the same SE "dummer" cable as here, or choose the balanced XLR "dummer" instead, OR get the SE 1/4 in. VIVO cable for no extra cost. This cable is supposed to be a significant upgrade, as it's a lot more expensive to buy separately. Whether the Aeon Open X and the Aeon RT open are identical, I don't know. I contacted Dan Clark Audio directly with this question, and the answer I got was "They are basically the same as the AeonX, and yes consider the VIVO cable as the difference in sound is huge." I ordered from Dan Clark Audio...

RobsonHi many thanks for the information. I intend to use these headphones single ended. Could you please explain what is the difference between the dummer and the VIVO cables?. I had not heard about them before. Thanks in advance to help this audiophile dummy 🙂

JosepfeIf you're going single ended get the VIVO cable if getting from Dan Clark audio. I did a little research on their site under accessories, then cables, and the Vivo cable is quite expensive if bought separately. It's supposed to be a "significant" upgrade. I bought mine directly from them with the VIVO cable, and I emailed them before purchase to find out what if any difference there is between the Drop versions and their Aeon RT versions (I bought the open back, which are more semi-open, in my opinion). The response I got back was they are "basically" the same; I quoted their full response above. They strongly recommended the VIVO cable over the stock Dummer one. What I can directly answer is I think they sound great, I've really been enjoying them! They scale well, and like any planar they sound better with plenty of power to drive them. I've got a Schiit stack of Bifrost 2 DAC and Lyr 3 amp, and the Aeons rock! I hope this helps.

RobsonMany thanks for your prompt and concise reply!. I tried the Mr. Speakers Aeon Flow Open, borrowed from a friend of mine. I really enjoyed them but I had the impression that their warm sound profile was not too different from the 6xx, which I own. I have read that the closed model has a little more of detail and is less warm (even if the RT has been retuned to provide more bass), that is why I´m more inclined to try the closed. The only dilemma is wheter to buy them from the Dark Clark website, as the shipping to Europe is significantly expensive (around 60 US dollars). With import taxes you end up paying around 600€ (more or less the price of the DC AFC 2 second hand, and almost double than the Mr. Speakers AFClosed second hand... It is not an easy decision, but maybe the offer with the VIVO cable is worth it. Thanks anyway for your kind help. Kind regards Jose Pedro.

RobsonLooking at past diacussion, wow the VIVO cable could be selected at no extra cost? Was this a special? I just had a look on the site and it's $200 extra for the upgrade cables.

JoshuaLIt was a special offer he had last year it looks like when ordering direct. I see what you mean, it's no longer available... On the plus side though, it's the same price as Drop now, and you don't have to wait. If you email their support, you can ask to be enrolled in the Club DCA and get 15% off future headphone purchases. I think it's only after your first purchase, but not 100% sure on that. It's definitely worth checking out. I still really like mine, it's one of my favorite headphones. Super comfy, and it's just fun to listen to. It sounds great! Of the headphones I own I rotate through these, the Focal Clear, and ZMF Aeolus. Check out Andrew's (@Resolve) reviews on theheadphoneshow (headphones.com) on Youtube if you want more info on these or on many other headphones. Very informative.
