The price does seem a tad high at first glance, but I’m happy to see that most folks at least appear willing to keep their minds open on this one. I don’t know if we can fully justify the somewhat more premium price point, but the fact remains that a very high end blade steel is being offered, the knife is completely U.S. made and we have three mouths to feed in this collaboration (Ferrum Forge, Pro-Tech and Massdrop) instead of the usual two. Those three factors are necessarily going to add to the bottom line. I can likewise understand why some might be hesitant to invest over $200 for a folder with aluminum slabs. And I’m not even going to lie to you, a titanium handled version of this blade that retained the button lock design would be almost irresistible to me. That said, as an owner of other Pro-Tech blades, I’ve never been anything but impressed with the quality, strength and durability of their aluminum handled folders. And most of those have been autos which are subjected to the extra stress and strain of repeated automatic blade deployments (which, if you’re familiar with Pro-Tech, you know kick open very forcefully). I haven’t always been able to say the same for other manufacturers such as Microtech. So if you’re on the fence about this knife and the aluminum slabs are all that’s holding you back, I’d say go for it. The lock up strength will still be tremendous, you’re getting a premium blade steel and you’ll be able to enjoy the added benefit of some weight savings. For myself, being one who already owns aluminum, button lock Pro-Tech folders, I’ll be content to take this opportunity to impress upon Dave Wattenberg that a market exists for the titanium handled version of a similar knife. ;-)
