Why not use two D cells instead of the block of eight AAs? The AAs don't seem to be wired in series so it's not voltage-related? Seems odd.

AnonymouseMost people have AA's around the house. Also AA's are one of the few "non-special" batteries that are rechargeable and easily found. Most people either have a large pack of AA's from a bulk store, or has bought quite a few Eneloops. Sure there are D cell spacers, but most people don't have that fitting.
