Hi everyone! One of my favorite things about working at Massdrop is that I continuously learn about other people's passions. The idea behind this drop was to create a product that would introduce people to new enthusiast communities and help them learn about each other's passions.
"Patina" was chosen as a theme because it is desirable in many different enthusiast communities such as leather goods, raw denim and EDC. By having this theme on a sneaker we were able to further expand the reach of this drop by also including a community that currently is not as well represented on Massdrop, the sneaker community.
In the past, all GourmetKickz drops have focused around the Nike Roshe. It is a great shoe but one that is relatively new and just recently came to popularity. For this drop, we wanted to chose two sneakers that had a very significant importance among the sneaker community. The Air Force 1 and Jordan 1 are classics among sneaker enthusiasts. Both are 80s silhouettes that hold historical significance in the world of basketball, fashion and sneakers.
Massdrop and GourmetKickz extensively collaborated to ensure that each detail of this drop was consistent with the Patina theme. In the sneaker world, as in most communities, details, artisanship and the story behind the shoe is very important. Chef of GourmetKickz spent many hours to perfect the coat of paint used, which includes bits of real copper in it. Multiple prototypes were created to ensure that the patina effect was captured accurately. The tongues of both shoes were not clear coated so that a significant part of the shoe would patina.
Lastly, significant thought was put towards adding an option to purchase special packaging for the shoe. With this add on option, Chef customizes each shoebox, which does increase the cost. However, we wanted to make sure we at least had it available as an option for those who appreciate it. In highly coveted sneaker releases, every aspect is thought out and the packaging is consistent with the overall theme of the shoe. Most sneaker enthusiasts store all their shoes in the shoebox as a part of their collection and well thought out packaging is always desirable.

Thank you for your continuing support! I hope you like or at least can appreciate what we were trying to accomplish with this drop :).. Let us know if you have any feedback or ideas for future drops with GourmetKickz!
