Haven't used a DE razor before but would love to try. It seems the Merkur (34C, 23C) are recommended a lot, and are at a good price point. I wouldn't mind spending a bit more for a nice razor as my first, but would this be recommended for someone's first DE razor? I don't have a lot of facial hair (think fu man chu) and shave maybe every other day. Trying to decide if it's worth the investment. Thanks!

PufferphishTotally. Althrough 34C is a killer shaver, an iKon is an iKon and they really stand out in terms of performance, quality and look. It's not a really an aggressive razor and you would be able to familiarize with both open and closed comb. And the handle is wayy longer, easier to maneuver. It's a really good first razor, but once again, blades is what is so unconsistant from wet shaver to wet shaver. I suggest that once you get your iKon, you go at tryablade.com and try different blades with your 101, it's going to make a hell of a difference from blade to blade. I suggest you start with Astra Super Platinum (greens), you should have a really great first experience ;-)

dieushadeawesome! Thanks so much for your reply and insight! I too thought the handle on those razor's looked a little short for my E.T. hands. Didn't think about closed/open design either, going to have to do a bit of research on that. Thanks again, and I will most likely be joining this drop ^_^

PufferphishMany people think they need a long handle on a DE because of what they are used to, but I would say it's the minority that can't use a normal length handle.
I started with a Merkur 23 with the long handle with the same reasoning. My subsequent DE razor purchases (Vintage Gillette, Standard and Ikon) have all been regular length handles with no problem and I too have long skinny fingers.

JeloguyWell, I tried shaving with normal length and my hand hurts, I have no confortable position. The thing is, long handles don't do any bad, don't make razors less confortable... so why not.
