Is it really worth it?
Over the last year the price of the HD600 & HD650's has been dropping. Currently you can find HD 600's for around $260 ish on line and at Best Buy. The HD 650's can be had for $319 at B&H photo free "non DHL" shipping no tax unless you reside in NY.. I get collectors wanting to get low number cans but is all the aggravation and waiting to save $120 worth it if you really want them. almost 30k request for another drop. Do you think you will get in next time? just some food for thought.
Are you mixing logic with audio-gear purchasing decisions? Tisk tisk :). I was just coming to terms with how I'll end up spending more on a new amp than the cost of the 6xx.
Another way to think about it: The frustration with low quantity available, ultra-high demand, technical issues trying to purchase them, and high impedance pretty much requiring a dedicated amplifier all represent barriers that actually helps people keep their impulsive spending on this hobby under control. For collectors these issues also increase demand/"hype" and possible resale value, although if the AKG K7xx and Fostex TH-X00 massdrop exclusives are anything to go by, they will keep pumping these out until they've taken all of our money...then come out with a cool new color-scheme to take even more. It's Massdrop's MO. If we had properly functioning brains we would just scrap the whole thing and get some earbuds at the local gas station. /s
Let's see: $200 at Massdrop vs. $320 at B&H... that's a 28% savings. That's worth being patient for. Today, in my country (Canada), the HD-650 is selling for CAD$560, or US$420. Now $200 equals a 52% savings. Well worth being patient for. This has got nothing to do with wanting a collector's item and everything to do with wanting a reference headphone at an affordable price.
I wouldn't scoff at $120 savings :p That's........*tries to engage my cases-of-beer-o-meter and head explodes*
*edit* Of course, I can afford to be flippant about it, as I was one of the lucky ones that had my order go through.
I certainly hope all of you are able to acquire the HD6xx in the near future. I do not think that you will and that was the point. I agree that saving money is a very good thing but if two years from now if you still do not have them is it worth it?
I too hope I can acquire them in the near future. I have waited two years already, so another two would be painful but do-able. I have AKGs and Beyers to keep me going in the meantime, although both are closed-back. It's just that CAD$426 (US$320) is not going to happen for me. But CAD$266 (US$200) could. Which is why I was so disappointed when my order was one of the ones that did not go through.
