Hey guys, I get that some of you are a little upset by the lack of sharpening choil. Don’t be. There IS one but it’s subtle and that’s the way I’ve been designing my custom folders lately. I get the best of both worlds with this feature, nice flowing lines AND a recessed heel on the blade for sharpening. We’ll discuss accentuating the choil on the final version with Jonas. Just be certain that this will turn out awesome. I’m really excited about this release... Even more so than with the Prism if that’s possible ;-)

TashiBharuchaThat was one of the first things I noticed. Good to know you've got it under control. Fantastic design!

TashiBharuchaI think the way it looks now is quite perfect. Wouldn't want a single thing changed! A significantly sized choil would break up the absolutely beautiful clean lines on this knife. If there was a choil, I would always be comparing the delivered knife to the one in the pics here and feel sad.

ToucanI think so too. There will be a discussion but rest assure if we do increase the choil it will not impact the design. That feature is key to me 😉

TashiBharuchaWell I commented on this before in reply to some of the choil complaints, but I feel inclined to comment again if there's a possibility of an actual change as a result. I'm gonna go a bit off topic and say I'm a long time photographer, which has resulted in years' worth of reading used reviews and forum comments. Now If you were to put stock in all of these reviews and comments you'd conclude that there isn't a single DSLR on the market worth buying, for one reason or another not one brand can get things right with any model in their lineup. Including the models I own and have owned. Of course the actual reality is you'd be hard pressed to find a lemon in the current lineup of any of these brands, basically all of them are great for the intended purpose and I intended user. So why the overwhelming negative comments? Well I'd say it's a trend towards people believing products should be designed specifically for them, whether they're the intended user or not, and whether or not they even understand the actual intent of the product. The complaints far outweigh the praise since a lot of people with no complaints simply remain silent. Now back on topic. Most of the comments I saw about the choil seemed to imply that the current design is a result of some kind of oversight or mistake, or simply a poor design choice which they need to draw attention to so it can be corrected. It seems like idea that it's an intentional choice with its own advantages isn't even considered, and that comes off as uninformed. Aside from aesthetics, which are important to me as well on a design like this, being able to make draw cuts or pull the blade back through any material without anything to hang it up is also a real thing and not a flaw. Most importantly of all however, is the fact that this is the Heat Seeker design. I signed up to buy a Tashi Bharucha design, a production version of a custom I've admired since well before the drop was announced, and that's what I hope to receive. Not to be dramatic, but so far I've bought 4 Massdrop knife releases, all collaborations with some of my favorite custom makers. If this and future releases end up being altered as a result of negative comments on the design itself, I'll definitely be less inclined to continue buying them. If certain people really want a conventional choil, I'm sure they can add one themselves. However if one is added to this release, I'd probably be more inclined to return it for a refund than try to remove enough material to get it back to the original design. I also do appreciate the irony of leaving a long ranting comment about not listening to comments, and I also bear no ill will towards the Massdrop community, I just want a Tashi designed knife, not a community designed knife. That could be a separate project for another drop maybe. Anyway, @TashiBharucha if you do end up reading all of this, I really look forward to the release, and trust that it will turn out great, I just hope it stays true to your intended design and philosophy and isn't compromised to please a vocal few.

RBnumber3Ok I know my previous comment was really long winded. Short version, I really like and appreciate the style of sharpening notch on your customs. I really noticed how it still has a heel but the build up to it is gradual rather than a defined notch when looking at the Rocketeer. My hope is for no change from the original design, but if there is one, it's only because you see room for improvement in your own design. I also think some commenters could stand to remember that a knife designer and maker who has collaborated with countless other makers in the last decade might actually know exactly what they're doing.
RBnumber3That was a great and refreshing read! Thanks for speaking up for the silent majority and I agree with all you said ;-) Tashi

TashiBharuchaHaha, I really did end up going on a pretty long rant there. I'm glad to hear that you agree with the sentiment though, also glad the knife remaind true to your design, it's perfect!
