ScottSerious question: do you know good places to buy backpacking food for less? Just getting into the activity and think some of the food prices are outlandish.
aleclThat’s average for backpacking food. If you are interested in making your own, check out “freezer bag cooking” on google. Lots of great recipes.

aleclI sometimes buy Mountain House cans, buckets and boxes when the price is right. For example, the four day supply contains 12 pouches. I've gotten them a few times for about $60. So about $5 per pack. Amazon hasn't had any good deals lately though. Here's the 3camel price graph for the 4 day box:

As for cans, the last cans I bought were Rice and Chicken at $14.99 per 10 serving can. I made seven 85g freezer bags out of each can. About $2.14 per freezer bag. Also, if you watch Amazon, sometimes sellers will list for a lower price but add shipping to make up for the lower price. If the seller offers free shipping at a certain sales amount, they can be cheaper:

And another: (free shipping if you spend $49)

I'm not saying any of that is as healthy as what's for sale here though. It's probably great, just a little rich for my blood at this time.

chuggerAlso—when REI has sales, check their stores. They'll frequently have some of the brands marked down 20% or 25%, that's a great time to stock up or test out unfamiliar brands. A recent sale got me to try out Good-To-Go and Backpacker's Pantry brands at about $5 per meal.

ScottThanks. I'll have to check them more often. I'm a member so might even earn a dividend? (maybe not on sales items?) I've seen decent prices at Sierra too. https://www.sierra.com/mountain-house-freeze-dried-chicken-fried-rice-2-servings~p~356ax/?merch=hp-recbh-prod356AX I can't bring myself to pay tax on Mountain House though.

ScottMeat free, to boot. Legumes are a lower cost food than dead cows and the like. IMO meat-free meals like this should be priced accordingly.
