I will send a free copy of Scythe to the first person who can tell me the name of the retailer (specific name/contact info) who is running this Massdrop. Contact me at stonemaiergames@gmail.com

stonemaiergamesSeems like this a preorder from a retailer. I can preorder from multiple other sources for roughly the same price. So how is this considered "unauthorized" when this isn't the only place setting up preorders.

FubarpSure, that's a good question. It's fine for retailers to accept pre-orders, but Massdrop carries the perception of overstock inventory, and that's not a good perception for a game that hasn't even been released. It also carries the perception that this is run by the publisher, and that's definitely not good for any brand (the message is: "We can't sell this game through normal avenues, so let's try to sell it on Massdrop." That's not always the case, but it's often true). Also, we ask retailers not to sell our games at more than a 35% discount off MSRP, and this retailer is violating that.

stonemaiergamesso if they had charged $52 you wouldn't have batted an eye? seems like a lot of effort to make 70+ people pay $3 more...

stonemaiergamesWell from my understanding, the only reason that this drop exists is because it was highly desired and voted on by Massdrop community members who are generally enthusiasts. That doesn't sound like someone trying to dump overstock inventory to me, it sounds like Massdrop is just responding to demand and found a vendor willing to sell to them. Massdrop probably isn't even aware of your discount policy.

stonemaiergamesPerception is a massive issue. But I can bet anyone that see's this drop , and saw that it reached it's goal in the first day isn't going to think anything bad about this. That is until they go into the thread and see the creator making a big deal about it. I would of done some back door communication with the site instead of publically outing this drop. You probably could of found the retailer and punished them while still allowing those who already placed the pre-order to get the game.

MerryHoI'm glad people are excited for Scythe, but they should just pre-order it from a retailer, not get it from an overstock site. At the very least, Massdrop should make it abundantly clear on the page that they aren't buying these games from Stonemaier. Retailers and distributors are our main customers, and if they think we're running a drop for Scythe, they're not going to want to work for us.

stonemaiergamesJamey, I love your games, and will continue to be a day one Kickstarter backer as long as you keep making them, but I really think you should work out this issue with Massdrop and the vendor they are working with, I don't see making this issue public being beneficial to you or them.

MerryHoThank you. The reason I'm making it public is because if we find out who the vendor is, neither we nor distributors are going to sell any games to them, which impacts everyone who puts their money into this drop.

stonemaiergamesLol right, if it was Miniature Market or Cool Stuff doing this for some reason you would stop selling games to them.
Not likely.

Which would be fine if the two biggest board game sellers on the internet weren't "sold out" of pre-orders.

stonemaiergamesWhy are you acting like such a petulant child? Would you like me to share with you some of the conversations my gaming group has had about this drama in the past 24 hours? Stop posting and keep this behind closed doors because you are severely damaging your company's PR by even contributing to the fuss about it here. Stop trying to justify yourself to the public; it's not necessary.
But most of all, stop trying to intimidate people joining the drop by threatening to take your ball and go home. It's hurting your image.

KornstalxThere's advising someone out of concern, and then there's coercing them to commit a course of action.
If you're saying he's bringing bad PR to his company, then it would be fair to say you're being a bad representative of the boardgaming community.

kawarazuOffering free games to anyone who is willing to tell him where Massdrop is getting the games from? That's pretty desperate and petty and stupid to me, that's not how you do PR and make the gaming community like you. That's just being Donald Trump stupid, or smart, depending on your views...

stonemaiergamesLet's offer a free game to anyone who will tell me where Massdrop is getting the games from. That is so professional of you! Yes, I'm sure that's how a successful company does business, with bribes! That's not desperate at all, or petty, or just plain stupid. I'm sure you think it's a brilliant PR move!

stonemaiergamesThe perception you are giving us is that you are petty. You are offering games to people to rat out where Massdrop is getting the games. What kind of perception should we take away from that?

joshcoadyand so you come on here and have a public argument with everyone and offer free games to people to rat our sources? sure, that's smart! can you imagine if any other company had an issue, this is how they would go about it? if Apple found a site that is selling their products illegally, they would go to a public forum and bad mouth the site or do you think they handle it differently? "Hey we will give a free iPhone to anyone who tell us where the site is getting their iPhones from!" Real smart! Besides, Massdrop is not a trash discount bin site and they are not getting the games illegally. [Moderated: Please avoid baseless speculation]
