i have been reborn.
hd820 running through my topping dx7 pro. it powers them just right on low gain and high gain pushes them much further. but volume is not all, the level of detail from this headset is freaking amazing. i have absolutely zero complaints from this headset. the feel really well built. they fit great on my head and best of all my wife can appreciate listening to these for her music. i have gamed on these and i have no issues at all i can hear the enemies excactly where they so much that it feels like im cheating. lol. i know its not a gaming headset but if its conforteable than so be it. my music lvl has been brought up to a whole different stage. i have zero regrets about buying this.

teknolemI use my HD820 with a FiiO M15 and a 1 meter long solid silver balanced UK-made interconnect cable. Quite a wonderful portable combination after 20 glorious years at home with the HD600 with a Wadia DAC.

teknolemhonest question; Why would you spend $2k on a killer set of headphones only to feed them, or rather malnourish them, through the use of your $600 DAC & Amp combo (which breaks down to about $300 each component)?!?! Why not Spread that money around and get the proper / full potential performance out of your headphones and give them a DAC and amplifier that’s deserving of their relatively high end price point? It’s like buying a Veyron and filling it with 1970’s leaded gasoline and using “Super Tech” motor oil from Walmart. Sure it works perfectly fine, but it’s not up to par with the car you’re running.

toodamnfrankI wish I had been as wise. I tried to buy the best I could afford. Then had to upgrade everything over time. I would have been far better off buying my HD800s and then upgraded as I could. Yes, it would not be as good until I got an amp capable of driving them or a DAC that it needs, but would have saved a lot of money. Heck, I would have been better getting a loan and paying off with interest.

FISTDEYUMAThe Audiophile hobby is a cruel one. No matter what we always end up over-spending on the next upgrade. I genuinely hope the original post’er is planning to upgrade his gear and treat those 820’s with the respect they deserve, otherwise their potential is being wasted. I hate seeing people with the amazing HD800S and above headsets purchase them only to run them on entry-level or “budget” gear. What they’re doing is the equivalent of running a Formula One race car on water’ed down 89 Octane that they found at their local Gas N’ Go. If you’re going to spend that much on flagship headphones than you need to feed them with a flagship amplifier and a flagship DAC. If it’s a budget issue, I imagine it would make the most sense to get a top tier amp and DAC first, and cheaper headphones to hold you over bc then you’re getting the absolute best / peak performance out of your cheaper headphones in the mean time and when you upgrade to a flagship set later it too will perform at the top of its game vs the other way around where an amazing set of cans are underperforming and not being given the best possible signal from cutting edge gear. Also waiting on headphones usually means that their price will drop if they’ve been out for a year or two. But hey that’s just my opinion / how I see things working out. 🤷🏻‍♂️

toodamnfrankHow would you grade the xDuoo TA-30? I just bought one, and this is my first foray into an amp/dac. I'm still learning, so I don't really have a good grasp of what is good, or great. I've been running my Fostex TH-X00 PH on the xDuoo. That's where I'm at in getting my footing, but I was intrigued by these HD 820's.

toodamnfrankI don't think it makes sense to get the higher end DAC and amp FIRST and THEN the headphones -- the transducers are the most critical part of the chain, not the DAC and AMP. Obviously, if the DAC and AMP are total crap and can't even drive the headphones decently, you're not getting great performance, but if you're buying the stuff over time, get the headphones first, in my view.

trellusThe problem with DAC/AMP first is you can likely end with a DAC and AMP that cannot support the power demands of high-end headphones. This will give the user a less than pleasant experience. A good DAC and AMP will make middle-of-the-road headphones sound great. I would recommend going with the HD 600 or HD 650, getting affordable headphones, along with a good DAC/AMP setup. Get a good DAC/AMP and save for the HD800s could be a better way to go. You might find a set of slightly used or scratched sales, for a good 60% off, if you are lucky. I got mine HD800s new at the outstanding price of $1100. You just have to be careful with the DAC/AMP. Be sure it has the power to drive the headphones with overhead. This will allow you to upgrade knowing that you will have the power to give you a good if not high-end system. In any case, you will be looking at between $500 to $900 to get a DAC/AMP that is good enough not to be a temporary buy. The worse thing you can do is what I did, keep chasing headphones until gave up and got the HD800s. Now I will have to find buyers for the headphones I no longer use. My next desire is the U12t IEM, which runs as much as the HD820! However, I find that I used my Noble IEM more than my HD800s, for one reason or another. Getting an IEM that is almost as good as the HD800s will have me set. Sadly no one is selling them used or scratched, as they are just too good to get a discount. I'll be taking a 2k hit on my bank in the near future.
