Inches are not "Standard."
They are what is typically called the imperial measurement system (or US measurement for anglophobes).
Inches should never be promoted as a "standard" and its that attitude which is the very reason why the US is so bass ackwards with units when compared to the rest of the world.
gnomedThey're called US Customary Units. British Imperial Units are slightly different in some areas, particularly in units of volume. "Standard" is just easier to use in casual conversation, like when you're asking for a wrench. :) No one is claiming that it's The Standard.
