I've not seen any activity here for the KBT-741 - thermal carafe with the manual drip stop. The manual sounds less desirable on first blush, with our modern focus on automatic everything, but it has an intermediate flow setting for making a half pot with the best flavor, as well as lets you control the dwell time at the start of a pot to let the coffee bloom. I'm on the fence about getting a coffee maker - right now I do single cup manual pour overs - but there are times when I have company over that a full brewer would be useful. Anybody else holding out for a KBT? Is it worth starting a poll?

em119I'm a pourover fan--I have several options but my most used is the Kalitta Wave. But, I got in on the KB741AO drop a few weeks ago, and I love it. It doesn't pull out the same nuance from the beans as pourover, but it's still excellent and save a lot of time when making more than one cup at a time. I think the manual drip stop is key. Without it, I don't know how you would get consistent extraction across the bed of coffee especially when making smaller pots. The water distribution over the grounds is better than a cheap machine, but it's not perfect.

urbantempestThanks. How do you like the warmer plate? The knee jerk reaction from most coffee boards is go thermal (because duh, history shows that warmers ruin coffee), but with the lower temp switch and control separate from the boiler I have to wonder if that conventional wisdom is keeping the coffee geeks from giving it a fair chance. The only real comparison test I can find is from Seattle Coffee Gear, who decided the glass was better or equal to the thermal after an hour wait, but it wasn't a fair test (not blinded, scooped vs weighed coffee, etc).

em119I keep it on the lower setting, and i haven't noticed any degredation in the flavor or consistency. But then again, I don't make enough coffee to have it last more than 30 minutes. If I make a big pot, it's because visitors want it. If I want more in 2 hours, I'll probably just spend the 5 min to weigh it out and make another batch instead of making a full pot to start. The glass carafe is super easy to clean.

urbantempestNow I'm hoping they'll bring back the drop you got, though I'd prefer a color other than white. The thermals I've had in the past always annoyed me - can't see how much is left and can't see well to clean it. My husband doesn't drink coffee, so I would probably only make full pots when we have company. However, I could easily finish a half pot on my own before it sits too long. At the worst I could transfer it to my travel mug (Zojirushi, love that thing).
