Initially I thought they might be to sterile or flat/boring sounding as they are very neutral sounding speakers. After about a month of listening to the KRK Rokit 6's and a few weeks with the JBL LSR 308s (returning both of them) I have no regrets with the Yamaha's. If you're thinking about powered monitors on your desk, I say pull the trigger on these if you can afford them.
Why would I recommend these over the KRK's or JBL's? Well first of all I loved both of the latter, especially the KRK's. The KRK's are amazing, have beautiful rich low end without a sub.... I could go on, I love them. For contemporary music like hip hop and EDM you can't go wrong with these, they are very exciting to listen to (great build quality as well). What made me stick with the Yamaha's though is the flexibility of these speakers. Do they have low end? Yes. Do they represent the mids and highs accurately? Yes. Can I listen to hip hop then bluegrass or alternative and will they sound equally (if not differently from the KRK's) as good? Yes (arguably better)! I can throw any genre at the Yamaha's and they sound incredible. Not to mention they are great reference if you are recording yourself play guitar or any other instrument.
My post feels a bit tangential, I know. I hope my rant helped at least one person who was on the fence. Realistic bass, rich mids, accurate highs. Best studio monitor in its price bracket period.
TL;DR Get these if you want amazing near field speakers at a great price, you won't be disappointed in the least.
