How do I start camping?

more_vert
Hello outdoor community, I recently moved from Singapore to Logan, Australia for overseas studies. After seeing the land, climate and nature here, I think I would like to experience camping in the outdoors at least once before I return. Unfortunately, I am totally clueless when it comes to this- hence the need for your advice. What's good to know or look out for with regards to camping? Are there any websites I can refer to? Also, what equipment would you consider necessary? Cheers, and thanks in advance :)

I would second finding a group/club/friends that do organized trips - main benefit of this is that others in the group might be able to help provide gear so you don't have to dive headfirst into buying everything since it can get expensive pretty quick. But if you want the TL, DR of what you need: Big 4 - pack, sleeping bag, sleeping pad, tent. Cloths - some for sleeping and some for hiking/during the day food/water - something to cook with/in (butane stove/stainless pot is probably most common). container for clean water, a water filter, container for dirty water. First aid - doesnt need to be fancy - basic from any camping store should be fine. compass/map - if you're going out hiking, don't be 100% reliant on GPS. For a list of ideas for where to sart if you want to buy the gear - look for BB for the budget routs. https://www.outdoorgearlab.com/expert-advice/dream-backpacking-gear-list

ZexallAwesome, this gives me a better idea of what to anticipate. And yep, I'm trying to find some friends who enjoy camping as well to tag along with! So far got a group to agree to go, but date and details have yet to be confirmed :)

Find a group, club, camping trips through sporting goods store, etc. and go out with others. Learn from them.

Hi I would google the national parks website for Queensland to find suggestions for potential camping locations. I assume you are in Logan Queensland. Also google the contact details of the various bushwalking clubs and seek information from them. They are a wealth of knowledge and always helpful to newcomers. Steve/ Melbourne
