Yep, I agree completely about the 789 drop. They shouldn't have opened the drop until they had sufficient stock. Because now I'm going to buy a different amp elsewhere and Massdrop misses out on my (and probably a lot of other peoples') money.

monkey4054Massdrop can't control the manufacturer, honestly everything I can see is a hold up on THX end as they've stated they are having trouble sourcing some parts for this device. Everyone is so quick to assume Massdrop is evil and trying to screw them. Trust me they aren't, this is a retail site unlike any other and people don't understand the tremendous value they have brought: Without Massdrop the K712 would still be the only option people had to listen to a modern iteration of AKG K series sound, and it typically runs 279 to $499 The HD6xx is $330 off the original MSRP of the HD650 and sells even at the new $220 price at least $80 less than a good deal on the HD650. The O2 is a headphone staple, before Massdrop it wasn't available below $100 unless you wanted to build your own The THX/R00 is based on the Foxtex TH-600, a headphone that sold for $999 for a long time and was still selling in the $600 to $700 range. The 789 is close in power and performance to my Cayin iHA-6 that sells now for $699 and used to sell for $999. The price for all this value is wait time and an atypical pricing structure. None of this would have been possible without Massdrop. You took my advice on the Metal + Hifi thread, please do so now. This continuous bitch-fest we've got going in the Audiophile is getting old... like really really old.

ElectronicVicesLook I definitely get what your saying. However, the issue is that Massdrop should not have gone "Hey! The drop for the 789 is live again, get excited!" Then they open it up for one hour with 400 units available to reserve, when there are 15k people who have requested it. Instead, they should have been more upfront and said "Hey, we're having issues securing a significant enough supply right now, the next drop will be delayed a few months, unfortunately". Then opened the drop at a later stage once they had confirmed enough supply for the approximately 15k potential buyers.

monkey4054Yeah no, that makes zero sense. Manufacturing decrease with volume, to an extent. So if the minimum it takes to hit the $400 price point is 500 and they have no idea when parts availability will allow them to make more, why would they not go forward with manufacturing? Massdrop is under no obligation, and can't promise availability to supply everyone who requests every product. The way you want the site to run is that if they make 10k units, and THX discontinues the parts, they shouldn't hold a drop at all because 5000 people who want it may not be able to get it.

KethSupply and demand makes zero sense? Yes, sure, they are under no 'obligation' to guarantee that many units, but when you greatly underestimate demand, you annoy your potential customers. You're telling me that Massdrop is unaware of how in-demand the 789 is? People have been waiting months and now have to wait months longer. You will lose many customers in the long run doing that. There's plenty of other options out there now. If Massdrop wants to shoot themselves in the foot and you want to defend that? Then go for it. My point was really about communication and transparency. Why keep waiting for something you might or might not get, even the next time around? I'll just take my money elsewhere...

monkey4054If they can't get the parts they need to build more amps, that's not exactly on Massdrop. It's more on THX for using EOL components in their amp then refusing to redesign while partnering with others to sell an amp that can't be reliably manufactured. Massdrop is not the only place this has happened with a THX amp. The initial Monoprice version was delayed to the market by many months for similar nonsense. I can definitely agree that Massdrop needs to do a better job on communicating the situation with their community though. I'm basing all of my prior statements on hear-say and conjecture. Not good ground to stand on, and that's as much on Massdrop as anyone.

monkey4054Supply doesn't have to meet demand, if anything your argument is that they should have raised the price to the point that only 500 people would be willing to pay for it. They simply could have re branded it as a special edition and added some pointless appearance change like they often do with cars. You can't lose customers if you have nothing to sell, and if you NEED an amp, I have no idea why you would wait when there are plenty of great options available. No one is arguing that they shouldn't have stated the number available up front.
