The Best Standard We’ve Ever Had?

I’m very disappointed that both the previous Mythic Championship and upcoming one are Modern. I started playing Magic around Fifth Dawn and I have never seen a Standard format that has new competitive decks popping out every three days for 6 months straight. I really wish I could play this format at the highest level, but at least I have MTG Arena to feed my craving for this awesome metagame. I also happen to be casting the Arena Super Cup Invitational on June 9th, a Standard tournament played on Arena. I’ve been preparing for this by consuming as much social media information on the format as possible and playing with as many different decks as possible as well. The Big Picture

Mono Red by Seth Manfield 3 Chandra, Fire Artisan 3 Fanatical Firebrand 4 Ghitu Lavarunner 4 Goblin Chainwhirler 4 Runaway Steam-Kin 4 Viashino Pyromancer 4 Light Up the Stage 4 Lightning Strike 4 Shock 3 Wizard's Lightning 3 Experimental Frenzy 20 Mountain 1 Experimental Frenzy 2 Dire Fleet Daredevil 4 Lava Coil 3 Tibalt, Rakish Instigator 3 Legion Warboss 2 Fight with Fire Esper Hero by Brian Braun-Duin 4 Teferi, Hero of Dominaria 2 Ugin, the Ineffable 3 Teferi, Time Raveler 4 Hero of Precinct One 3 Elite Guardmage 4 Thief of Sanity 2 Hostage Taker 4 Thought Erasure 1 The Elderspell 3 Tyrant's Scorn 2 Despark 2 Oath of Kaya 4 Glacial Fortress 4 Godless Shrine 4 Hallowed Fountain 4 Isolated Chapel 4 Watery Grave 4 Drowned Catacomb 1 Swamp 1 Island 2 The Elderspell 1 Hostage Taker 2 Dovin's Veto 2 Narset, Parter of Veils 2 Duress 2 Enter the God-Eternals 2 Deputy of Detention 2 Command the Dreadhorde Mono Red and Esper. Mono Red saw very few iterations since the printing of Light Up the Stage, people are playing around with the number of Experimental Frenzy, Chandra and Risk Factor, but all in all, it has been the same deck for the past two sets. Esper however, went through lots of tuning and evolving. In fact, not too long ago, Esper referred to Esper Control. At some point it referred to Esper Superfriends, the Elderspell deck, but now it seems to be clearly the Hero of the Precinct One deck. All of these versions are valid to play depending on the metagame you expect, what’s good about it is that they are all great against Mono Red. Which is why those two archetypes have been at the top since day 1. Everything Else You could argue that someone playing strictly Mono Red and Esper could get away with it all season long and you would not be wrong. These two have been part of the metagame the whole time for good reasons, they are amazing. They are beatable though, let’s look all the decks that are serious contenders because they have game against at least one of the two. Immortal Gruul by Eric Froehlich 2 Domri, Anarch of Bolas 4 Llanowar Elves 4 Growth-Chamber Guardian 4 Paradise Druid 4 Gruul Spellbreaker 4 Legion Warboss 4 Rekindling Phoenix 4 Skarrgan Hellkite 2 Shock 3 Lightning Strike 2 The Immortal Sun 8 Forest 7 Mountain 4 Stomping Ground 4 Rootbound Crag 1 The Immortal Sun 1 Mountain 3 Lava Coil 2 Vivien Reid 2 Chandra, Fire Artisan 2 Sarkhan the Masterless 1 Sorcerous Spyglass 3 Thrashing Brontodon There are more Gruul variations than I can count, but the most recent and successful one seems to be this one that plays The Immortal Sun. This expensive artifact has been popping back in Standard thanks to all the Superfriend decks and Command the Dreadhorde decks. Twitter user ‘’yoman5’’ popularize the above version and if you want to read a bit of what he has to say, even his latest list, check his tweet! https://twitter.com/yoman_5/status/1136505794135019525?fbclid=IwAR33fKQEl6YFMZUmJc8RAPV8g-b1Sg_scZClEY9_ELEESL3vfVh9v5F-K18 The other versions go deep on the Planeswalkers … Just like everyone else. 4c Dreadhorde by Jim Davis 4 Merfolk Branchwalker 3 Paradise Druid 4 Wildgrowth Walker 4 Jadelight Ranger 1 Massacre Girl 1 Trostani Discordant 4 Teferi, Time Raveler 2 Sorin, Vengeful Bloodlord 4 Tamiyo, Collector of Tales 2 Vraska, Golgari Queen 1 Teferi, Hero of Dominaria 4 Command the Dreadhorde 2 Breeding Pool 1 Forest 1 Godless Shrine 3 Hinterland Harbor 4 Interplanar Beacon 2 Isolated Chapel 4 Overgrown Tomb 3 Temple Garden 2 Watery Grave 4 Woodland Cemetery 1 Swamp 4 Duress 2 Cast Down 2 Kraul Harpooner 1 The Elderspell 1 Narset, Parter of Veils 2 Thrashing Brontodon 1 Unmoored Ego 1 Massacre Girl Every now and then we get a spicy brew that clings around. This one was originally made by Ondrej Strasky and Stanislav Cifka. If you’re looking for something super fun to play, this it it. Between Interplanar Beacon and Wildgrowth Walker, casting Command the Dreadhorde feels alot like comboing. Any deck with Wildgrowth Walker has a shot against Mono Red and then any deck that’s going to try and grind you out is going to have issues against our deck full of value. Jim Davis changed the list a bit to include a basic land and that’s probably smart considering people started playing Field of Ruin and Assassin’s Trophy to punish these manabases. Jeskai Walkers by John Rolf 2 Teferi, Hero of Dominaria 4 Sarkhan the Masterless 4 Narset, Parter of Veils 4 Teferi, Time Raveler 2 Kasmina, Enigmatic Mentor 3 Fblthp, the Lost 3 Deafening Clarion 4 Lava Coil 2 Shock 3 Negate 1 Spell Pierce 2 Prison Realm 1 Ixalan's Binding 4 Steam Vents 4 Interplanar Beacon 2 Clifftop Retreat 3 Glacial Fortress 4 Sacred Foundry 4 Hallowed Fountain 3 Sulfur Falls 1 Island 1 Deafening Clarion 1 Negate 1 Prison Realm 2 Ixalan's Binding 1 Cleansing Nova 2 Lyra Dawnbringer 2 Remorseful Cleric 1 Narset's Reversal 1 Jaya's Immolating Inferno 1 Dovin's Veto 2 Ashiok, Dream Render John Rolf might be the person to blame for when it comes to the number of The Elderspell that sees play. This superfriends deck started out as Blue/White and came 2nd at an MCQ in the hands of Zac Elsik. It was then iterated on over and over, but ultimately, John Rolf, MPL player tuned it to what it is now. Teferi, Time Raveler, Narset and Kasmina all provide of bit of prison effects which slows down your opponent enough that you can find Sarkhan and smash them. This deck is super cool to play with and bring a new kind of game play we had not seen before. It’s not quite control, definitely not aggro, maybe midrange? Izzet Phoenix by Jean-Emmanuel Depraz 4 Arclight Phoenix 4 Goblin Electromancer 4 Crackling Drake 3 Lava Coil 2 Finale of Promise 4 Chart a Course 3 Tormenting Voice 4 Opt 4 Shock 4 Lightning Strike 2 Radical Idea 2 Spell Pierce 6 Island 6 Mountain 4 Steam Vents 4 Sulfur Falls 1 Lava Coil 1 Spell Pierce 1 Negate 2 Disdainful Stroke 2 Entrancing Melody 4 Legion Warboss 1 Beacon Bolt 2 Charging Monstrosaur 1 Saheeli, Sublime Artificer Another MPL player being successful with a different archetype. Izzet Phoenix has been around since Guilds of Ravnica and honestly, not much has changed. Finale of Promise however is a game changing addition to the deck. I’ve played my fair share of Phoenix decks in Standard and instantly I recognized that Finale was one of the missing parts. Being able to return your Arclight Phoenixes with a single card is a big deal, especially in matchups where games go long. In fact, because it’s in your deck, you can now drag the game if you want, knowing that if you draw Finale of Promise, you’ll be able to reload. Decks with Crackling Drake have always been at least decent against Mono Red simply because the 4th toughness is a big deal when they don’t have Lava Coils main deck. White Weenie by Reid Duke 2 Gideon Blackblade 2 Teferi, Time Raveler 4 Dauntless Bodyguard 3 Law-Rune Enforcer 3 Adanto Vanguard 4 Skymarcher Aspirant 4 Snubhorn Sentry 4 Benalish Marshal 4 Venerated Loxodon 4 Legion's Landing 4 History of Benalia 2 Conclave Tribunal 12 Plains 4 Glacial Fortress 4 Hallowed Fountain 2 Teferi, Time Raveler 1 Island 2 Dovin's Veto 2 Disdainful Stroke 2 Spell Pierce 4 Baffling End 2 Deputy of Detention The ol’ White Weenie. This is my personal favorite, if I have no idea what to play in a given week because I’m out of the loop or something, I’ll jam White Weenie. This is in fact what I registered recently at the Magic Online Championship Finals. It’s rarely going to be a terrible choice, there are less and less Kaya’s Wrath and Cry of the Carnarium in the format. In my opinion, the blue splash is not good at the moment. I think it was decent when Nexus and Esper Control was around, but if you’re going to face Mono Red alot, you don’t want to mess with your mana. Simic Ramp by Bloody 4 Llanowar Elves 4 Incubation Druid 4 Paradise Druid 4 Hydroid Krasis 3 Entrancing Melody 1 Growth Spiral 2 Ripjaw Raptor 4 Frilled Mystic 4 Mass Manipulation 4 Nissa, Who Shakes the World 7 Island 10 Forest 4 Breeding Pool 4 Hinterland Harbor 1 Simic Guildgate 4 Negate 4 Thrashing Brontodon 2 Ripjaw Raptor 2 Tamiyo, Collector of Tales 2 Vivien Reid 1 Entrancing Melody Martin Juza and other Arena grinders have been playing this deck for a while. The core being mana dorks, Nissa, Hydroid Krasis and Mass Manipulation. There are Bant version too, which include the powerful Teferi, Time Raveler. This deck has a rough time against Mono Red, but it is quite good against everything else. Remember when I said the 4c Dreadhorde deck was hard to top off in the late game? Well, Mass Manipulation for 4 will do the trick. The late game decks in the format can’t keep up with Nissa followed up by Krasis and Mass Manipulation. The latest technology to fight Mono Red has been Ripjaw Raptor and it’s quite a good one. Back up with some Thrashing Brontodon, I believe it’s very doable to beat them even if it’s your worst matchup. With the knowledge that I have, if I was a player this weekend at the Arena Super Cup Invitational, I would register something similar. Many More I have not even went through half the existing decks you’ll face on the Arena ladder. Grixis Midrange, Sultai Dreadhorde, Golgari Land Destruction, Simic Nexus, Jeskai Control, Selesnya Tokens, Mono Blue Tempo, Boros Heroic, Dimir Control … The sky’s the limit in this beautiful Standard format. It keeps on giving every week and I love it. Truly a brewer’s paradise.

nah dude, it's just not solved yet. I hate the current standard, too many planeswalkers. It's not fun.
