So because it's a hobby they are worth 200+$? I love keyboards man, but keyboard prices have gotten out of hand for EXACTLY that reason. People taking advantage of trendiness and the scenes growth. Switches don't cost that much to make. Keyboards don't cost 200$ to make. I'm not buying any keyboard that isn't priced reasonably just because there is a community behind it. Would love to see more reasonably priced boards, there are some really great ones.
ToastoSandoI agree with you. Some designers and manufacturers sell stuff at insane prices because their brand name is tied to it. Then some of their products are exclusive or small batch runs. But, there will be people to buy them. So if there is a market. Good them. I just won't support them. My daily driver has been a $50 magicforce with $40 PBT caps, love the board even though the stabilizers are crap. Recently bought a Planck from Craigslist for a great price. It has an aluminum case, zealios, and PBT caps. You can definitely feel the quality

ToastoSandoThe most I ever paid for a keyboard was 170 for a Code brand. You can snag many "workman class" 101 key cherry keyboards for less than 100. It is only when you start adding features like RGB or jump up into the more esoteric connoisseur class that you start getting up there. In fact, I have never seen a keyboard above 200. For the poor among us, 69-99 is a very realistic figure for plain old backlighted keyboard

ToastoSandoJust like anything price goes way up for lower qty high quality stuff. You can buy a bike at Walmart for $100 or you can buy a boutique brand high end bike for $8000. Obviously the materials are not costing 80 times more. But if everything is made to lower quantities with higher tolerances and more involved processing with companies that might have almost as many employees producing lower quantities things start to add up fast. Yes $500 is nuts for a keyboard. But if you want a fancy custom CNC case, the most expensive switches, and keycaps made in usa/Germany all made in smaller batches that will never be sold in stores your asking for it to cost allot. Also keep in mind that one of those old quality keyboards made in usa/uk etc that went for $150 in 1980s (like a IBM model F) would be $450 now if you adjust for inflation. I'm just saying how the price is justified and worth it for some people, but obviously you don't NEED a $500 keyboard just like you dont need a Ferrari or a $8000 bike.. But if you do have that Ferrari or bike there is a difference and a reason you spent that money.

ToastoSandoi get you most of the way, but the mechanical elements in a keyboard does add cost. the spring, and triple components, and a double shot plastic keycap plus rgb lights on a 100+ keys keyboard with normal margins, and not chinese produced, 100+ dollars does not seem to be wild, i actually don´t think margins are so great, and also on the more "niche" brands, they will not sell as many.. Owner of 2 Ducky keyboards, a 3 and the new model (which i hate, the keycap quality has gotten worse)

H82failYeah but do the component upgrades really justify the pricing differences? Usually, not. There are plenty of companies who sell quality products at reasonable prices.

ToastoSandothere are plenty of budget ones. its easy to get caught up with the expensive ones, but if you look, there are plenty good mechanical keyboards around and under 100 dollars.
