Introducing Drop + THX AAA ONE Linear Amplifier

With the success of the AAA™ 789 Linear Amplifier (and now the Panda Wireless Headphones), our partnership with THX is only getting stronger. Now, we’re excited to announce our latest collaboration: the Drop + THX AAA™ ONE Linear Amplifier.  The ONE will be the new entry point for ultra-clean, linear sound in a desktop headphone amplifier. Just like the 789, it’s designed to optimize your audio experience. While the 789 provides more power with its balanced design, the ONE will still drive most headphones with ease. It’s also built with an all-metal enclosure to protect the technology inside. Now we’re including a pre-amplifier output that allows you to connect the amp to a powered speaker and switch back and forth between headphones and speakers on the fly.  Here are some other highlights:
  • Ultra-low distortion AAA™ circuit with high-voltage swing
  • Ultra-low noise THX architecture (less than 1 uV of output noise)
  • Power to drive demanding headphones with ease (Up to 2000 mW at 32 Ohms, 1000 mW at 16 Ohms, and 275 mW at 300 Ohms)
  • 3-position gain switch (allows for fine-tuning of signal-to-noise with any headphone or IEM)
  • Ultra-low noise pre-amplifier output (Use the ONE to drive active desktop speakers or a dedicated power amplifier in a home stereo setup, and easily switch between headphone-out and pre-out with a dedicated button)
  • High-quality aluminium chassis (which also works to shield the electronics from RF and other external noise)
  • $199 MSRP Target
We can’t wait to bring this amp to market. Stay tuned for more updates in the coming weeks—and as always, if you have any questions or comments, leave them below. Best, The Drop Team

Tried the 789 and shook the head. The amp suffers compression peaks, and has a hardness, with a bit of glare. I have no idea why it's so popular. It's not terrible, just nowhere near great. The hype train was of the bullet train variety. Everybody bought in.

Not a fan of the 800 at all. That 6~K peak would be like running ice picks in and out the ears using the THX, for me anyway. The 789 is neutralish. I have the Gilmore Dynamid and Dynahi that are more neutral, have a wider bandwidth and both are offering a better dynamic. The Sangaku is more open, fluid and has more insight. With a very homogeneous presentation. Better detail. The 789 is good for the money. Just not the highly touted end gamer the net has portrayed.

Hold on to your hat. There has never been a single measurement to totally explain how something sounds. The synergy, when two or more components combine to rise above the station, can't be guessed at. It just happens. That's what makes a system sing. For me? The 789 has a bit of grain and glare that works with some phones and doesn't with others. The dynamic (macro) is stunted (IMO). Good amp for the money. Should be in the talk for "best buy" at its new low price. The best measurement devices are on the side of your head. If it can walk your soul to musics edge? Whats to complain about?

Well the 789 way works anyway. I actually rewatched the Z review and he infact does not say it in that review. I know somebody said it in a video and I’m still sure it was Z but as to where that is I couldn’t say lol. Like I said I have used it that way.

Dw i believe you haha, I'll do some research tomorrow and maybe look at the circuit diagram (with my very limited knowledge of electronics) and find out there.

I'd recommend the darkvoice if that's what your looking for (after all you can swap out the tubes if you'd like), solid-state amps are for accuracy & tubes change the sound (eg. adds warmth). For DAC just get the Topping E30 it's one of the best DACs full stop and it's only 120. ASR Review: https://www.audiosciencereview.com/forum/index.php?threads/topping-e30-dac-review.12119/ You can look at the SMSL SU-8 too.

Would my creative x7 external dac/amp benefit from this? Or would it be better to swap that out with another dac

"Ultra-low distortion AAA™ circuit with high-voltage swing" I feel like people might be overlooking this important point. The current low-cost THX amps (789, 887, SP200) suffer from compression due to a lack of voltage swing. I currently have the SP200 (which apparently has the worst compression of the three amps, so take that with a grain of salt) as well as the Asgard 3, and the Asgard drives my HD 660S headphones way better than the SP200. Sure, there's a bit less detail and the sound is a little warm, but with the Asgard I get much better dynamic range, slam, soundstage, and imaging. The ONE amplifier could actually end up sounding better than the 789 (at least for dynamic-driver headphones) and would almost certainly be a better alternative to the Asgard 3 at this price point (depending on your preferences and power needs).

I have the the DT900 600Ohm and want a powerful/quality SE amp for my desk. Warm and Punchy is what I'm looking for. I'm currently using the Aune X7S which has a great balanced out, but none of my headphones sound good via the SE out. I should say, as good as the balanced or as good as my other SE amps. I plan on moving the X7S to the living room for use with my 6xx and 4xx. I've thought about getting the Magni or Atom, but just figured I'd go with the Asgard 3 as I like the modular DAC option.

The Asgard 3 sounds like a good choice for you then. It should definitely do a good job of driving 600 Ohm Beyerdynamics.

The Element II is really good, you have pretty much all the features, plus it has a built in DAC.

Is this intended to be a more affordable alternative to the 789?
