For fishing, I'd reccommend the Sidekick because of the scissors, spring action pliers, you can get a clip, and has an exterior opening knife blade at a reasonable price. If you are looking for a Leatherman as a toolbox on the hip, the Wave is a good choice though for the money though I'd prefer a Rebar/SuperTool 300 with a Micra.

IMO, the Leatherman Wave is the perfect balance of compact size and good selection of tools. I use mine with the optional pocket clip and it's a bit thick and heavy for dress pants but is completely at home in a pair of jeans. The wave probably sees the most pocket time for me and has saved the day many times. Build quality and durability are also some of the best in the multi-tool market (and I've had a lot of multi-tools from different brands over the years). If I had to choose just one EDC item for the rest of my life, the Leatherman wave would be it.

By "Leatherman-like knife" do you mean a knife with a multi-tool function? If so you have to pick between a "a good knife with tools" or a "multitool with a good knife". The first option, the knife is the primary function and all others are secondary. For the first option, I recommend the ff based on my personal experience: 1. Kershaw's Shuffle series gives you a decent knife with limited tools 2. Leatherman's Skeletool gives a good blade with pliers and a driver (the clip lets you use it as a small pocket knife). 3. Leatherman's T2, T4 and K2, K4 are bulky knives but have a lot of tools too. For a full multitool with a decent knife: 1. Leatherman's Wave, Charge, OHT, Free P-series, Wingman/Sidekick have good outside accessible blades. The Leatherman Rebar is a balanced choice but the blade is not outside accessible (i assume you want outside accessible knives since your hands are full). 2. Gerber's NXT and MP-600 series have decent blades and are more affordable. 3. SOG's Powerlock and Victorinox' SwissTools are hefty but have toolsets that rival Leatherman's. I personally carry a dedicated knife and usually a bladeless multitool. If weight is an issue, there are a lot of high-value lightweight knives and multitools out there: Ontario Rat 2 and Gerber NXT is a good combo.

Gonna have to agree with mirrored Andrea: the Rebar is small enough to be an unobtrusive carry but big enough for most MT jobs.

When it comes to leather man the more tools it has the better imo. I carry the surge just cause it has everything I could possibly need.
