The X-Mid is a strong value because it has a lot less markup than other tents. Typically a tent is marked up 70-100% by the manufacturer to the retailer, and then marked up another 70-100% by the retailer to the customer. So a tent that is listed for $600 at MEC might cost MEC $350, and was actually built for $200. Conversely, the X-Mid is sold direct to the customer so there is no retail markup, and Drop has priced these as a really good value, so the manufacturer markup is less than normal. So a much higher % of the purchase price is actually going into the tent. The X-Mid is a legitimately premium tent with a innovative and highly functional design, yet priced low due to the direct to customer business model. Other tents are this price point are almost certainly much cheaper to produce designs. For example, the X-Mid is built at the same premium factory as MSR tents are. If you look at the MSR Hubba Hubba in Canada it's priced at $560 + tax. That's coming from the same factory and would cost roughly the same to build. The Hubba Hubba has the added cost of poles, but also saves costs in other ways, such as using basic YKK zips instead of premium YKK AquaGuard zips as the X-Mid does. So these tents would cost approximately the same to build, yet the X-Mid 2P is priced at $370 Canadian while the Hubba Hubba is priced at $560. Both tents are still subject to sales tax, and the X-Mid might also get hit with an extra 18% tariff when coming into Canada, but it still works out as a substantially better value. Also note that Drop is also beginning to sell on Amazon, where the import fees to Canada may be less. They have the 1P on there now for a total cost including all shipping, taxes and tariffs of $356 CAD. The 2P will be about $100 more, so about $450 CAD after tax etc, whereas after tax a MSR Hubba Hubba would be $630. You're not going to find a higher quality tent for less.
