I think a 980/980ti is the lowest end GPU that comfortably supports VR. Supposedly the 970 supports VR but I hear it's not a very good experience (FPS dips leading to nausea). That should give you a benchmark to compare against.
techwizI've done it on the 970 and you're spot on in that it "works". On the 980ti I have run into no issues yet, but like @Waah said, everything is still in beginner mode right now. There are a couple real polished games, and a lot of promising demo's, but nothing that has made my computer burst into flames yet.
That said, it is an incredible experience and I can't wait for them to advance the technology.

AlexPkI was going to pull the trigger on a Vive this week but I ended up walking away instead because I just don't see the content being there right now. I really want to give it a go but $800 is a lot of money.
techwizIt most definitely is. And I'm not trying to sway you back to it, but the fun I've had with family who don't normally like games has made it a much easier pill to swallow. Also, there is nothing like seeing your man's man relatives let out a frantic shriek because a whale swims by.

AlexPkExperiences and stories like that have sold me on VR but I'm really more worried about VR becoming like other expensive gaming peripherals where it's cool at first but quickly dies off because there's so little content to keep the platform feeling fresh and exciting. I really want a wheel, but there aren't many PC racers that have great support for them and I really want a HOTAS but there aren't many flight sims out there that really take advantage of them. The downsides of being an enthusiast I guess. One day.
techwizMan, I can't wait for the day I can play something like Mechwarrior with a HOTAS and VR.

AlexPkElite Dangerous supports VR and HOTAS, although a space ship isn't quite a mech. And Project Cars I think supports a wheel and VR. Man, I wish I had infinite money. So many things on my wish list.
