What does an EDC truly tell us about ourselves?

more_vert
Many times we hear things like, "If they take care of their shoes, they likely take care of other things around them.". The same is said for cars and houses. But what about what we have in our pockets? Like shoes and vehicles, to some, an EDC can range between many things. For some, it's purely utility, and others it can be the basics. If we're talking cars; the basics is "it goes from point A to point B". If we're talking EDC, you're likely using the same wallet for 15+ years because it still does its job. If we're going beyond the basics and utility, that's when we get into aesthetics. Here is where trends can start to show themselves. But then again; it is also the place where we can see the most unique things. For instance; one of the biggest trends right now is the minimalist wallets. The most common being the leather with the pull tab, or the semi-hard case with a similar mechanism. I've seen some of those semi-hard cases with carbon fibre, some with brushed steel, and even wood. What helps to make such things more unique, is how one can pair it with other items. For the most part, the people who get a carbon fibre wallet, are likely toe get carbon fibre key rings, perhaps a pocket-knife with a carbon fibre finish to the handle and more. However, it gets more unique as people may, instead of only matching, they will contrast either a material, or add accent colours. I've been considering adjusting my kit a bit. My brother has an EDC that is both for utility, and aesthetics. Most items in his kit is semi-gloss black in finish. This includes a compact pocket knife, a pen light, key chain multi-tool, his sunglasses, and (I think) a hard case slim wallet. For myself, I'm a little less organised and ready. So my current wallet is a medium brown leather bifold wallet that I purchased because I was working in a professional environment for years. My keychain isn't too special. It's a split keyring McLaren, made of black woven nylon, a medal pivot with the McLaren symbol engraved, and has red accent stitching. And I don't carry much else other than my phone which currently has a woven fabric case on it. If I were to formulate the upgrade to something with say, my branding colours, I'd need to go with a 40 to 60% grey, and a medium blue. Almost a cerulean blue. And, quite honestly, a greyish blue could be possible as well. I'd probably look into the brand my brother has for the wallet and see if they have a grey carbon fibre, or solid colour blocking to go with my branding. Then, with the keys, I might try to get a vegan leather key ring of either grey or blue. And, I should probably say for myself, I really like complimentary and contrasting. So if the wallet is grey, I'd likely get a blue key ring. One thing you can do to a semi-hard/hard wallet, is use a vinyl wrap to change the look and finish. So if my brother were to upgrade his, I could take his old one and wrap it. Same with phone skins and phone cases (that are not fabric). If we were to truly look at what my current EDC says about me, it's that while I like quality goods, but having order may not be at the top of my list currently. But the proposed EDC (without considering the phone case) tells that I care about things being organised, and that I put thought into things visually. It also acts as a great representation of my brand. And a business card to suit will take it to that next level. (And in current era, a face mask to compliment such items would be great too!) Hopefully any readers of this will feel inspired to upgrade or improve their EDC, or at least look into certain products. - Knightunknown 2020-01-25
