I've always preferred Kelty and Lowe Alpine packs - they truly have the most versatile suspension systems available. They are comfortable for the long haul, handle heavier loads when needed and are also built like TANKS! I own several Kelty packs, including a Red Cloud 5600 that I bought in the late 1980's and it's as good as the day I first tried it on. Similarly, I have a slightly smaller Lowe Alpine that far surpasses the comfort of anything available today.
All these Z-pack and Gossamer ultralight packs I see people carrying are great...but they're usually tattered and worn out after a few months of use - patched fabric, broken compression cords, busted zippers - I just don't see the sense in buying something that weighs a little less for a lot more that gives you less durability and use.
