The following is my personal subjective opinion. Non-leather. There are plenty of robust and attractive materials which can substituted for animal skin. Some companies have been using a compressed microfiber vegan leather for shoes and belts. I have one pair of 3 hole oxfords made by Solovair (the original manufacturer of Doc Martens) that have about 5 years of wear on them. They look great! Stainless steel and black chrome are preferable to the chintzy looking copper and rose gold fads. Anodized aluminum can look good too. For cloth, there is something about cotton duck or good heavy duty cordura that can be the tipping point on a messenger bag or backpack. The way Chrome and Manhattan Portage render these materials puts a lot of the more expensive bags to shame.
