daniellopez783Per drop description this one cable is a 4-core 28 AWG cable. Which means it's rather thin (and flexible). However, this also means it cannot hold 5V (+/- 5%) USB spec requires, on a 500mA load, if it's more than 1.5 ft (50cm) long. This is usually fine if you intend running keyboards.
Phones/tablets and their chargers operate off-spec (on purpose), for supplying more than 500mA. They do it for offering you shorter charging times. This is why your phone charges slower if you charge it from a PC, and this is why some PCs/laptops come equipped with "special" USB ports that can provide more than 500mA.
So, if you intend using this cable for charging your phone from a "plain-old" USB port on a computer (which will anyway deliver up to 500mA), you can safely order 3 ft long version (on 6ft, it's 4.6V already on a 500mA load). Longer ones will still work at the expense of increased charging time.
However, if you intend charging your phone via a source capable of 1000mA or more, be it a charger or a special USB port on a PC, you should choose 1ft option. Longer ones will still work at the expense of increased charging time (an example here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2545497)
To answer your question; as a _backup_ cable, yes, it will work. Better keep it short though. You need to go for "USB A to USB micro".
