Support for Alternative Layouts
This is a summary of how alternative layouts have been supported by kits such as Colevrak and Homing. It is not a discussion of alt layout performance and development, but if that interests you I highly recommend starting with Pascal Getreuer’s A guide to alt keyboard layouts (why, how, which one?). It’s a concise and comprehensive overview with links to some great sites that go deeper. He also has a separate Links about keyboards page. The Keyboard layouts doc he recommends explains layout goals and metrics in detail, summarizing the alt layouts discussed here as well as more than one hundred others. Sculpted-profile The majority of custom keycap sets are sculpted-profile (Cherry, SA, MT3, KAT, etc. - more on profiles generally here) so let’s start there. LivingSpeedBump let us know that sometimes datamancer keyset drop for 40 bucks, with similar(or the same?) keycaps. So this has me wondering, regarding the 125 listed ebay sale, how many men in the middle are cutting in, and why for, and how much money are they asking us to give them for nothing? I certainly didn`t see any cost breakdown detail offered for analysis. When maybe instead of; for 125 they could sell them for 50, or 25, and still turn profit. So don't think i'd give those ebay vendors any sale money at that listing price.. Geekhack gold. haha
A better price for the keycaps might be like, 15 or 30 bucks, and that's how they can get them into keyboards they sell for around 79 bucks. A price at 79 which includes the keyswitches, the pcb, the controller, the conctruction, and the fancy case, the manufacture, the shipping and handling, and the profiting of each of these parts.. So how much of the $79 could be going to the keycaps given all of those other parts? Or how much are we being charged for unsaid whatever elsewhere?
So it would be nice if someone reasonable sold the keyswitches alone on ebay or amazon, or here, Not for 125, but for 25. However, if you read up, there was a guy claiming his chrome plating on this product was flaking off.. you might want to check that out.. I`m about to suggest to him some replacement rims,or whatever, that are on ebay, heres a preview of the link http://www.ebay.com/itm/Typewriter-Vintage-Antique-Style-Keys-Ring-and-lens-unassembled-DIY-100pc/261868642258?_trksid=p2047675.c100005.m1851&_trkparms=aid%3D222007%26algo%3DSIC.MBE%26ao%3D2%26asc%3D20131003132420%26meid%3D21fd270d84234b0d953a0c52f52a0749%26pid%3D100005%26rk%3D2%26rkt%3D6%26mehot%3Dpp%26sd%3D261845219705 I`d like some glass top keycaps myself.. :-) Anyhow peace and good luck with your board :-)
