SenorPlatanoSound cards have a Digital to Analog Conversion chip, that converts the digital 1s and 0s into analog music, essentially. There are higher quality chips, there are chips that "sound" different. The power supply to the chips is a big factor as well as the environment in which the conversion is done. Inside a computer is both audibly and electronically noisy, so a "shielded" sound card will have a small benefit over one that isn't. Most sound cards and DACs (as their referred to in the audio industry) will also feature higher quality electrical components like capacitors, resistors, et al, that will influence the quality of the sound as well. All of these little things add up to a much higher quality sound than the typical on-board supplied audio connections.
