I own the L-TracX (version they no longer sell/make which had higher dpi options (800, 1600, 2400, 3200) and 2 mono ports for external switches) and have loved it for these several years I have owned it after it replaced the Logitech Marble that I had for a decade.
Modded mine with a clear ball, moved and replaced the dpi indicator light with a bright red/white LED under the trackball to light it up (off = 800 dpi, red = 1600 dpi, white = 2400 dpi, pink-ish white = 3200 dpi), and made my own switchblocks. Although unlike Ripster, I simply replaced the mono connectors with stereo chassis connectors and wired power on one and ground on the other so I could use LED's under the Cherry MX switches without drilling a hole in the chassis for the extra wiring. Hopefully Massdrop can get one of the better versions in the drop (unfortunately not the L-TracX).
@Dross FPS games are certainly easy if you are used to playing with a trackball. By FPS I mean anything from Planetside 2 and Battlefield to Warsow and Quake Live, trackballs work just fine as long as you take the time to get accustomed to it (most people only use a standard mouse for gaming, thus never have a chance to get used to a trackball while gaming). Hell, I have been kicked/banned plenty of times since people never believe me that I am simply using a trackball when I manage to do a quick 180, yet still have nice and smooth aim.

NOBODYI used to game exclusively with an old Logitech trackball, the ambi version set to the highest sensitivity Windows would allow. I still prefer it over a mouse when it comes to twitch FPS gaming. Once you get used to it, and start using the balls momentum to your advantage it is very competitive.
