How thick are these? would they provide good padding for walking around in boots?

Personally I’d go thicker for boots, especially for tramping (which is Kiwi for ‘hiking’). Great for running and other sports, though. I wear them all summer at work ... ahem, different pairs, though.

one review says it is 40% wool instead of 58% merino wool, is that the case?

The socks that I received in 2019 were only 40% merino wool. The support person responded by giving me $15 in Drop credit, and also said "It appears that these may have been falsely advertised. Our team is currently looking into the root of the issue."

58% merino wool, 40% nylon, 2% Lycra if they have it listed on the page this way then I expect it to be accurate. Can't be off by too much or they would get in legal trouble.
