For the community members leaving feedback about kitting changes, new molds etc. We hear you loud and clear. Unfortunately (or fortunately) we made the decision many years ago to pursue a double shot tool setup that optimizes robustness and precision over flexibility. We spent over a million dollars and two years (just ask the round 1 Susuwatari people) to calibrate those molds to the state that they are in (which I will personally claim have better tolerances than any other double shot keycaps on the market, including GMK).
I'd argue this was the wrong decision, as most people care more about variety and flexibility versus whether the legend thickness tolerance is within 0.05mm vs 0.9mm. But that's the constraints we currently face.
We're working on investing more money on other tooling that is potentially more flexible, and as you've seen with our Marvel projects (which were about a year in the making), we have some new novelties slowly trickling out. This won't resolve every single "I need a 1.25u tilde key for my super niche board" issue, but this is more to say that the decisions we make are almost entirely based on production constraints versus ignorance.
KevinI understand that it’s always a business decision, but I still want to mention again the interest in Colemak/Dvorak kits that have not appeared in any of the new runs, even though those molds do exist (and have even been used recently for 3277).
KevinI hope the new tooling addresses 1.5U keys for all rows - that seems to be the major thing preventing the use of those kits on Ergodox and similar boards - and I'd argue those aren't particularly niche.
Where are the Orange Mods?, even the accented Enters and Esc are missing in the Base Kit, this looks more like a rip-off rather than an actual MT3 version of the SKIIDATA keycap set.
Sure, I'm familiar with the set's background, and also wondered about TKC not being mentioned at all. Perhaps Drop should have launched this set with another name, considering all that's missing from the "OG" SKIIDATA set?
And Extended 2048.
Why do you say "Serika, being PBT, is only R4"? There are PBT molds for R5 bottom row, but not for ABS. They just decided to got with R4 for Serika, that's why I decided to get rid of it...
OrangeShadowI asked Zambumon why and his response was just "I wasn't bothered, it's almost flat with an angled case" as he isn't an ortho user, and at the time the NuMini and some 5x15 boards were the only angled ortho boards.
Turns out, the production cost and your margins are affected if you offer R5? While MT3 Extended 2048 had flaws (Biip chose to split the kits to sell more evenly, the ortho support was suboptimal but complete) it didn't make too many kitting mistake.
Honestly, if DROP had prototyped at all, or checked with any number of users, or even just copied other manufacturer's kitting, we would all be better off.
This should really have had an international-kit! Considering how many ski resorts there are in the Alps, the Nordics etc. this one tickles the "nostalgia-bone" of this Norwegian mountain-ape at least.
I don't like this trend of not offering keys that molds already exist for. Or breaking pieces of the base kit out into their own kits, without reducing the base's price, making the base less useful.
Susuwatari: $120 for an extended base kit, UK ISO support, and a number pad
Skiidata: $110 for a smaller base kit, plus $20 for UK ISO, and $35 for the number pad. So $165, and even after buying those extra kits, you'll still wind up with fewer keys!
Nevermind that the Hobbyist/Accent kits for Skiidata don't contain as many keys, but cost $90 compared to Susuwtari's larger $60 extras kit.
It's not a "colors make it more complicated" issue, since Skiidata only uses two colors, grey and orange. Susuwatari is more complex - keys in dark grey, light grey, and red, and legends in cream, blue, red, and green.
If all of these keys are made at once, from one big waffle iron mold, why not include all of the same keys every time?
SwearWolfMT3 does have some secret niche 40's support. You can cover a JD40 (12U) with both accurate legends and profiles using BIIP MT3 EXTENDED 204. You just need the ALPHAS and NOMAD kits. Also, of note, since MT3 has identical profile for R2 and R3 (just reversed), I think it's the only sculpted profile that has an R2 1.5U key. Since that key also happens to be a backspace (reverse the 1.25U R3 Tab key) it's perfect to support QAZ. If you just want accurate profiles, ALPHAS + ERGO + NOMAD will do it. The tragic part is you have to either buy two NOMAD kits, or use the 1.25U R3 Enter as your Tab/A key. Also, the only 1.5U R4 keys in the entire BIIP set are the Shift keys in the ERGO kit. I just used an extra 1.5U Function key and some matching accent mods from a Dasher set I already had. So basically ALPHAS + NOMAD + extraneous DASHER keys covered my QAZ.
Of course all of this is ridiculous. They should just add an extra Tab key, a 1.5U Shift, and a 1.75U R2 Backspace. Then It would be a perfect mods kit for any staggered 40's board and I think ortho as well. I put up with it because I love MT3 and sub-60's though...
How much do I need to contribute to get MT3 a Q legend that doesn't look like a lollipop? I'd seriously consider taking one for the team and funding a new mold.
I don't think that's the point really. It wouldn't be so bad if it was for some of the keysets they produce. But the MT3 is basically meant to be an old school keycap, so it would have been more fitting if it had had a more classic font. But all were asking really is to have a separate keycap for a real Q, this is not a Q, it looks more like an on/off sign to me.
ItIsWritten> MT3 is basically meant to be an old school keycap, so it would have been more fitting if it had had a more classic font.
I agree 100%. I really admire Matt3o's work in general, but I think the MT3 font was a misstep. It just looks too over-designed for a retro-styled profile.
No R5 flat bottom row, seems this is yet another MT3 set I'm passing on.
We all know new molds are a non-trivial investment, but I fail to see why DROP won't spend the same effort it would on a novelty set to make a Ortho/Ergo set that isn't deaf to customer needs. The longer the community boycotts the sets or settles for flipping the bottom row (which doesn't work since they're text mods), the more I'm sure "the numbers show nobody buys ortho kits" - it's baffling why DROP continues to not support its own keyboards (Preonic, Planck) and meet the needs of its customers. It's physically painful to use R4 bottom row as your thumb hits the sharp bottom edge of the cap and the angled surface means there is very little top surface area but a whole lot of edge.
No R5 bottom row for Ortho, no buy.
MiroboruThat's correct. They do not have doubleshot molds for R5; it's only available on dyesub sets and I've been told getting/making doubleshot molds is tens of thousands of dollars.
