Support for Alternative Layouts
This is a summary of how alternative layouts have been supported by kits such as Colevrak and Homing. It is not a discussion of alt layout performance and development, but if that interests you I highly recommend starting with Pascal Getreuer’s A guide to alt keyboard layouts (why, how, which one?). It’s a concise and comprehensive overview with links to some great sites that go deeper. He also has a separate Links about keyboards page. The Keyboard layouts doc he recommends explains layout goals and metrics in detail, summarizing the alt layouts discussed here as well as more than one hundred others. Sculpted-profile The majority of custom keycap sets are sculpted-profile (Cherry, SA, MT3, KAT, etc. - more on profiles generally here) so let’s start there. Because each row has a unique keycap shape, alt layouts require a unique keycap for each legend that moves off its QWERTY row. the story and details: I bungled up my keycool board like a noob fool, so I went with this keyboard hoping the design would be a bit more robust to spills and simpler to clean/maintain.
After 16 months of use the board has held up better than expected. The most used keys are failing which I didn't realize was possible and took some frustration before figuring out the stem interface of a key cap can crack which can somehow lead to key presses not registering correctly every time.
I have replaced the bad caps with the pbt caps from my keycool and continued forth, so thats pretty awesome ^_^.
I would suggest getting some of the goop stuff and a 1" cheap chip paint brush. These two items will help you very easily maintain the board by brushing hair and particles from between the keys. The electronic goop stuff will allow you to get a bit more aggressive with matter thats stuck to the caps or board and clean around the switch stems without fouling up the inside of the switches.
Also, if you get an extension cable to plug the keyboard into and leave the extension cable connection at the edge of your desk this will allow you to quickly and easily unplug the board to perform quick and easy cleaning.
For what it's worth this keyboard collects a lot more hair than my keyboard at work.
