Question, perhaps stupid. Is it possible to display arbitrary information on the LCD? For example, could I get it to display an unread email count, CPU temp, etc.?

qqqqYes, the lcd will be able to display arbitrary information with per-pixel control of the screen.
Now, doing things like unread email count and CPU temp will take a little bit of OS side scripting but that should be it :D
