What the...? There is a new ErgoDox drop, and it only has three days to go:
I have been accessing the forum from a different URI: https://www.massdrop.com/buy/ergodox-4 and I didn't realise that there was another page that would show a fresh drop.
Massdrop, I think you are short-changing both yourselves and your customers in two main areas:
1) Potential users have to sign up to see product information pages, which surely dissuades most potential buyers from ever seeing what ErgoDox is.
2) Today, a friend sent me a link to the new drop, which I did not know about, even though I hit the "Request" button at the top of the page (https://www.massdrop.com/buy/ergodox-4) to be notified of when the group buy will be available. So it looks as if there are 1,613 users who would like to buy an ErgoDox keyboard the next time it is offered, but Massdrop did not bother telling those users that there is a new drop. Currently, there are twenty-seven people who have signed up for the new ErgoDox drop, and we still need seventy-two people to reach the minimum price. Three days left.
If you've been waiting for a new drop, go sign up now. (-:

MarfyAgreed. Initial reactions to a link that was shared earlier today [1]:
- "Wow. I can't even view the page with out logging in or giving them an email address. No thank you." - "'Thanks for your attention, here's a popup obscuring all that functionality that you came here for!' F****** that. Tab closed, never to be opened again."
I personally identify with these sentiments and expect that they are particularly representative of this product's target demographic.
For what it's worth, you can mitigate this by sharing a different URL [2], but I don't believe this solves the problem.

MarfyThanks for your helpful suggestions. We have no intention on short-changing our community members. Here's a few answers to your thoughts:
1) Our business wouldn't operate if it wasn't for the sign-up wall. It has nothing to do with wanting your personal information (we don't even verify emails until you make a purchase), it has to do with vendor pricing policies.
2a) Our "request" emails are sent out throughout the day in batches, this was launched last night/this morning, and it's possible you haven't received yours yet.
2b) People have been waiting 3 months for this to come back, they don't need 10 days to decide if they want to click "join" or not. Ending the buy earlier means getting our orders with vendors placed earlier, which means fulfilling everything earlier. On something that hasn't been rerun 4 times, we absolutely run the buys longer to let people advertise and 'collect' more buyers.
2c) The 1613 users are the number of requests -ever- that have asked for a rerun (not simply since the last buy). Internally we look at the # since the last buy as a better indication.

Markit should be noted that once requested, you cannot un-request an item, I've noticed. So, that number is inflated. I'm not arguing your points, just adding mine!

MarkThanks Mark. It makes more sense now that you've explained things. I'm certainly very grateful to Massdrop for the ErgoDox drops, but was concerned because I thought I had nearly missed this week's drop. I never meant to suggest that Massdrop might short-change users, but rather that Massdrop may miss out on customers, who in turn may miss a chance to get an ErgoDox. Anyway, I'm glad to hear that you're notifying those who expressed interest.

MarfyI've taken what you've said under consideration and made a small change to our site routing. https://www.massdrop.com/buy/ergodox-4 (and other url's with similar structure) will now bounce you to the active version of the drop if it exists. Thanks for making Massdrop better!
