The Biggest Old Update to Mechanical Switches
Hall Effect: What is a Hall Effect switch and will it turn you into a gaming god? TL;DR: Nope, but there are reasons why you may want to use a Hall Effect Keyboard. Hall Effect switches are the newest trend in mechanical keyboard switches. From Gateron to Geon, switch manufacturers are starting to release HE switches. With Wooting at the forefront and seemingly the best implementation of Hall Effect technology, many other brands seem to be playing catch-up. We’ve seen releases like the RAKKA, BOOG75, DrunkDeer, and MOD007 HE start to stir up competition. But do you need another keyboard? Is this one going to be the end all be all for you? Is HE Endgame? I guess maybe I can check for continuity where the switches connect to the MCP23018 . . .
I did have a similar issue (but I was new to soldering) - about 60% of my keys worked then I realized I did not solder all the SMD's in the correct direction - the little white "line" on the top of the SMD should face the square solder point (google images for ergodox and there are some clear examples).
After freaking out - seriously, I really freaked out ... I did research on the board and learned it actually doesn't matter which side of the board (top / bottom) you solder the SMD's. Thankfully I was able to correct my issue by correctly soldering a "second set" of SMD's on the "bottom" of the board in the right direction on my trouble keys.
I did end up using through hole diodes because I ran out of SMD's (radio shack didn't have any SMD's) - they worked just as well, again as long as they are in the right direction. As mentioned they make the acrylic alittle snug but it's nothing crazy.
It may not be the same issue - but it sounded like what I went through!
