So is the little opening with the extra bit of shipping material in it intended as a laptop sleeve? I gotta say I don't feel very confident in its ability to protect my computer. I'm not really seeing a justification for this costing 80$. I guess I didn't think it would feel and look so cheap.

SlatsThat 'shipping material' is a seat. You could take out the seat and use it as a laptop sleeve, though. (Remember that it isn't intended for that.)
