You have to take Wikipedia with a grain of salt sometimes, but it was originally an agricultural tool: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Karambit
The self-defense aspect is a lot more recent. That said, this thing would get some looks! Having just watched a few videos on Karambit technique, this would be the equivalent of having a rabid pitbull in your pocket.
