This is a bit better than the other drop because its actually practical. You'll get exactly what it says on the tin, nothing less, and it will be high quality too. However, I'm not entirely sure why you'd buy one. Also, the MSRP is a bit BS, CNI seems to delight in giving people seemingly random quotes since they don't list prices on their website.

Basically, you have two options here, either this laser or a cheap $2 one off ebay. The only real difference will probably be beam quality and build quality, this will be better than the ebay ones on both counts, but for 17x the price, it better be.

SodaAntHey SodaAnt

Thanks so much for the awesome feedback. You prefer WL instead? right? xD

We need users like you to create polls for lasers since you have a deeper knowledge than anyone else at MD.

Take care,

Andy

andyHECK NO. At least with CNI you'll generally get a quality product. Wicked lasers, once they finish lying to their customers and shipping subpar safety glasses (with a 1W+ laser too!), at the end of the day I'd honestly take CNI even if the prices were higher. The larger issue is really one of legality and cost. For the most part, you can't sell a >5mW laser in the US, even if it has safety features (Though wicked would disagree with me on this). Laserglow puts it best, I think: https://www.laserglow.com/page/FDAregulations

This leaves one with two options. Either go for a different color, like yellow, or find some other feature. The problem with colors like yellow is that its unlikely to be found at a low enough price, you're still looking at ~$200 probably for a low power yellow pointer.

I'm sure if you somehow found a way to legally sell a 1W blue laser or green laser, it would sell like hotcakes, but until then, I can't think of a great way to do it.

EDIT: Here's some useful pricing info for other lasers from CNI: http://laserpointerforums.com/f55/confirmed-cni-gb-closed-payment-82586.html

This is a much better price than they have there, so if you want a high quality, low power green laser, this isn't a bad buy, just not for me.

SodaAntThe WL comment was in jest!

Thanks for sharing the other info. Yeah we wanna burn stuff too with lasers, but legally we can't. However, we might be going the ErgoDox route and making the ultimate DIY laser for LPF and laser enthusiasts.

andyIt's a pity that you can't!
The regulations in the US are indeed pretty annoying, but I think it's still legal when they meet all the FDA requirements for handheld lasers class 3b or higher aka. beamshutter safetyswitch and so on. For example some of the skylasers in the voting (https://www.massdrop.com/vote/lasers) have all FDA safety features.
Also laser modules are totally legal to import, because they are obvisiously no handheld lasers. So importing hosts and modules to the US is totally legal. I think some would even prefer they modules, because you can make your own custom lasers with it. CNI for example also offers every module they use in their pointers without the host
IMO there are 3 Ways you could still sell lasers with higher output than 5mw
1. Sell laser pointers that meet all FDA requirements and are made by companies that aren't on th FDAs red list.
2. Sell modules only.
3. Sell modules with fitting hosts or kits like the survivallasers kit (it comes also from the USA so no problem with costums anyway) in the voting
The disadvantage of 2. and 3. is that it requires a little knowlegde. (3. IMO isn't more complex than building a shelf with instrutions that are also given in case of survivallasers)
Also I see that many lasers experts are here like SodaAnt and Massdrop is well known on LPF (laserpointerforums.com). So from my point I see many experienced potential buyers that would be happy about modules or kits.
Please think it over Massdrop is great and it should be possible to use the advantages of this plattform to get good priced high quality lasers.
