rsx19I have a metal spacebar that I've been using for more than 4 months and the stem is still fine when I cleaned it out a few days ago.

rsx19Nope they will not damage your stems unless you epic fail and shouldn't have a mech in the first place.
If anything, the cherry stems might splay the aluminum connectors apart, causing the key to get loose with typing, in which case you would gingerly use needle nose pliers to squeeze them back for a snug fit.
