Hi, I've never ordered from Massdrop before and am also sort of new to fountain pens. I've several (sorry) questions about this drop and some general ones, I'd be very happy if someone could answer any:
1. Is this the nib which has an iridium tip? How different is it from the Lamy Safary's nib? (I have a Lamy Safari Fine nib variant which I use primarily on a standard moleskine, it writes good but I am looking for smoother nibs) 2. My impression from some research is that the Faber Castell Loom has a much smoother nib (and has some very light flexing as well) and hence is a much better upgrade from a cheaper first fountain pen - does that make sense? Are there any chances of a Loom drop in the near future and should I wait for that one instead? 3. Do we get warranty on the product we receive? 4. Can we reasonably track the shipment after payment? 5. Are any extra charges levied when paying via debit card or net-banking? 6. What's the average "drop time" from shipment for the Indian capital? 7. Perhaps I am asking for too much but would it be possible to see a picture of the light blue variant with the original sport gold clip on it from real life (instead of the studio like renderings)? :) The light blue variant looks very nice in the pictures here, but I am slightly obnoxious of buying something in metal which is labeled "blue" without seeing it in person - I love blue tints but dislike hard blue paint, if that makes my concern any clearer.
Thanks a ton for organizing this. Sorry again for the wall of questions; just wanna be a bit careful :P

uncaredforRegarding question #1 its a matter of personal choice and perception. Extra fine and fine nibs tend to give feedback (scratchiness) as you write some worse than others. Asian nibs tend to be even finer than European counterparts. You can swap nibs out if you like, even gold if you looking to spend the money. Taste vary from person to person so smooth to me might by scratchy to you. I like feedback to a certain degree. Ink viscosity and paper quality play a part as well as to how smooth you want your pen to write, so keep that in mind.
Regarding question #2 flexing nib. Faber Castell makes some great pens. You can pick up the Loom for about $40.00 USD on Amazon if you can't wait for the drop to appear here on Massdrop. It can be a while depending on how many people request the drop or if Massdrop can make a good deal better with the manufacturer. Steel nibs generally do not flex well, if you are looking for good variation in line strokes gold nibs are the way to go in my opinion. You can also check Noodlers pens ...Ahab flex comes to mind.
Regarding question #3, #4, #5 and #6 I never had issues with Massdrop honoring warranties or returning and replacing defective items. You can track your shipments with no issues thru you account on the Massdrop website or by the email you receive regarding your orders. Let me add this... I had ordered a pen from Massdrop back in February and totally forgot about it. When I went to track the package, Fedex had already removed information regarding shipping and delivery details, hence I never received it. I emailed Massdrop support and they sent a new pen with no question asked. Now keep in mind that some items in drops are limited quantities and once the drop is gone so is the item. Massdrop might keep some drop items in stock for replacement purposes but that quantity is surely limited. Massdrop accepts credit / debit cards and Paypal as far as I know. Any additional charges will include the shipment fee and applicable taxes. Note not all drops ship outside the US. Drops times vary from drop to drop and they are posted when the drop is generated. Drops shipment dates are also posted within the drop.
Regarding question #7 you are on your own on that one.

uncaredforI have a Kaweco Sport with a Medium nib and it’s smoother than any of my Lamys(safari, and studio). I think quality control on Kawecos are much better than Lamy. The loom is a bigger pen than this one— this is more pocket friendly. i have a plastic version now so I am thinking of getting the AL version too because I’m so happy with my current Kaweco!

uncaredfor1. Your biggest issue here is the Moleskin. Shitty paper. Rhodia, Leuchtturm, Clairefontaine and a dozen others make notebooks similar to a Moleskin but with paper suited for fountain pens.
The Kaweco nibs are nicer than the Safari, imo. Probably rate them on par with TWSBI.
2. Faber steel nibs are outstanding. I don't have a Loom, so cant comment on that, but I have an Ambition and a e-Motion and they are amazing to write with. I prefer the Ambition to most of my gold nibs tbh.

uncaredforI don't think iridium is used in any modern fountain pen nibs. Here's an article from Brian Gray of Edison Pen Co.: http://edisonpen.com/ipgnibs2 Here's another from nibmeister John Mottishaw's Classic Fountain Pens blog: https://www.nibs.com/blog/nibster-writes/how-can-we-talk-about-iridium
I have a Faber-Castell Loom, and yes the nib is fairly smooth, but I don't use it much because I personally don't like the stiffness of the cap and I find the styling and ergonomics to be a bit underwhelming.
I have several Lamy Safaris and Al-Stars and find the nibs to be a bit hit-or-miss sometimes. I ruined a couple while learning how to do some basic nib tuning, but I experimented on Lamy nibs because you can buy replacements.
As for paper, Moleskine isn't that great for fountain pens. https://www.penaddict.com/blog/2017/11/13/moleskine-classic-notebook-review I personally enjoy Leuchtturm, but Rhodia and Clairefontaine are also excellent.

jjcfI've never used more premium paper, but I've found the Moleskine to be better than most I've used! Rhodia does look much better though, I'll probably buy that alongside. The confusion between nibs on the Loom and the Kaweco keeps going up, I think I'll have to buy both :P
Thank you for the reply!

skrooksAh, it seems to be an alloy similar to iridium but not iridium, cool.
Indeed, Kaweco's pens look way better than the Loom, but I care a lot about the nib too. I'll have to buy both now :P And yep, definitely gonna try Rhodia dotpads too. Thanks for the reply!
