I skimmed through the replies, and didn't see this addressed.  I have had the 5 stone for over 20 years. I have a small 3 stone in my tackle box that is newer, and like so many things not nearly as robust or strong as it's older brother. What makes a VERY big difference in how well the system works is getting the C-Clamp to mount the system on or the round based unit that can be bolted down. Until I go these "extras" I did not appreciate the system as well.     Having to buy the support bases as extra has always irritated me. It is not just Lansky that does this. I know of two other similar systems that sells the bases separately. I would recommend the "C-Clamp" as it is easiest to use even traveling. The circular base has 3 holes to screw/bolt it down with to make it truly stable. It can be used "free standing" but I have had it rock/move on me. I mainly use the circular base on my collapsible wooden t.v. tray style work bench with various holes drilled in it for just such things as anchoring the Lansky, that I can use at home or take with me if needing the tray ( i.e. at a friends etc.) to work on a gun, knife, tool or watch.
