I have an audio question. I'm excited to get this new E7, I've been rocking a 5 year old Panasonic Plasma that still performs well but is starting to show a lot of image retention and burning. Last black Friday I bought a new surround system. I got a Yahama receiver, a set of 4 KEF Q100s, a KEF Sub, a Pioneer elite center channel, and I'm using two very old Sony satellites as the front right and left surround channels. The receiver instructions explain these extra channels provide some additional depth but I didn't want to invest in new speakers for those channels. It sounds great. With the new E7 rocking Dolby Atmos, I want to experience that through my speaker set up, but my Yamaha receiver does not support Atmos. Is there way to get the Atmos experience without buying a new receiver? If I have to get a new one, what should I get, and what can I do with the old (less than a year old) one? Is it even worth it, I don't have ceiling speakers or anything, will I enjoy Atmos with my current setup?

pagodahutI'm not sure about the E7 providing ATMOS audio to your system and speakers, maybe to a soundbar. I believe that you would still need a receiver to decode the ATMOS to the individual speakers. You can get speakers that have drivers on top of their cabinets that are designed to reflect the ATMOS surround audio, these have been designated as 'Dolby ATMOS Enabled' speakers, (see Atlantic Technology 44-DA). But from your KEFs, these would probably be a step down. Additionally, they probably will not be compatible with formats such as Auro 3D and DTS UHD.
I have been building on to my system by purchasing a second amplifier and speakers for the ceiling, I already have the preamp/processor that can handle all of today's newer audio formats.

vlad840So to properly experience Atmos I would need a new receiver for everything plus up-firing speakers to get that audio height, at a minimum? And you've got a step further with a preamp? Worth it? I don't imagine the E7 alone would work with my speakers since the speakers can't possibly get powered by just the TV. But if there was some other unit I could add to the system to give my receiver Atmos powers, and I could add speakers later, that sounds like it would be worth considering. Ultimately, my guess is that the best solution is going to be to buy a new receiver and buy additional speakers. Sounds expensive, my wife will either be displeased or make me buy her something equivalent.

pagodahutI believe that a new receiver and adding ceiling speakers later would be your best bet. There are drawbacks to upward firing speakers, mainly they are very position sensitive. That's one reason that they have not sold so well. There may be cheaper alternatives, but to not cut corners and have a good experience, I would recommend ceiling speakers and a new receiver.

pagodahuti just recently upgraded my reciever along with Buying the atmos enabled speakers. I was in need of a new reciever to Support hdmi 4k passthrough And I went ahead and bought the Dolby enabled speakers. They are not bad, but I do recommend placing them high like mine are on top of two high shelves And I think that does make a difference as opposed to being shelf high. If I owned this house I would definitely be installing ceiling speakers. So to actually answer your question I would just upgrade the reciever To something that Support Dolby Atmos. After that I would shop around and do some research on how you would want to handle the “calling“ speakers.

pagodahutPretty sure what the "Atmos Support" means is that the _soundbar_ that the E7 has can interpret and produce an Atmos soundscape. I tried this feature out in a BB and it sounded pretty amazing for being integrated into the TV. To get a better Atmos experience you'd probably have to buy another soundbar/receiver that supports it, bypassing the one included in the E7.
