An Open-Back Revolution

The ultimate acoustic experience? The natural one: where sound reaches your ears through the open air, from a source right in front of you. It’s not a difficult concept to wrap your head around. In the history of headphone design, however, it’s proven difficult to wrap it around your head. Until now. Meet the Drop + grell OAE1 Signature: a groundbreaking pair of headphones with game-changing driver geometry and an ultra-expansive soundstage. Working in harmony with the body’s innate process for perceiving stereo sound—where we face audio sources so that they’re directly in front of us—the OAE1 Signature positions its drivers further out and in front of the ears to create a soundfield that’s stunningly natural. It’s an innovative yet undeniably intuitive acoustic concept that grell founder and lead designer Axel Grell first implemented in high-end Sennheiser headphones like the HD 800. In the OAE1 Signature—with its uncompromising materials, meticulous tuning, and wide-open earcups—he’s perfected it.

Innovative Driver Placement: As Nature Intended

Study the structure of the human ear, or simply watch people listen to different sources out in the real world, and you’ll see that our bodies are built to intake stereo audio in a specific way. That’s facing the audio source, with soundwaves reaching the pinna (the ear’s external structure) at an angle from the front, rather than directly from the sides. Undoing the tradition of unnatural headphone driver positioning, the OAE1 signature puts its ultra-responsive biocellulose drivers in front of the ear and further away from it, angling each one back to send sound to the pinna much like a natural stereo source. This positioning also reduces unwanted reflections from the membrane and magnet structure, helping improve fidelity and reduce listener fatigue. And where past attempts to implement similar positioning (such as the historic AKG 1000) have resulted in poor low-end reproduction, the OAE1 signature’s driver design generates impressive bass response due to an onboard acoustic baffle.

Expansive Soundstaging, Expansive Compatibility

With its revolutionary driver design, the OAE1 signature was already well on its way to a wide-open soundstage. But the goal was to create the most open open-back headphones on the market—and you don’t get there by stopping at the drivers. Widening the soundstage even further, Axel Grell and his team developed earcups that are 90-percent open metal mesh and a woven stainless steel acoustic damper mesh, both of which allow sound waves to pass through with minimal interference. It’s an ultra-expansive soundstage—and it’s rivaled only by the OAE1 signature’s ultra-expansive compatibility. Wired to accept both dual- and single-entry cables, each earchup features a socket design to accept a 2.5-millimeter plug. (An integrated overhead wire allows for the input signal to be shared between both drivers when using a single entry cable, which means you can connect a single-entry cable to either side.) For versatile listening out the box, the OAE1 signature also comes with a double-sided TRS single-ended cable (dual-entry) and a single-sided TRRRS balanced cable (single-entry), both with silver-coated, oxygen-free copper wiring.

Grell: Going Further for Audiophiles

Axel Grell created some of Sennheiser’s finest headphones—including our very own HD 6XX and HD 58X, as well as models in the high-end HD 800 Series. Over the past several years, he’s been hard at work founding his own company to take his innovation, and motivation, even further. “I've always tried to create the best possible acoustical experience for the money, no matter the price point,” Axel says of his approach. “With grell, we put our resources solely into achieving the best sound possible, emphasizing the acoustic experience of the product and providing audio that is fine-tuned to the user’s ear.” With world-class products already behind him, we can only expect his next releases to raise the bar even higher. That’s why we’re proud to be the first brand to partner with grell—and why we couldn’t be more excited for future launches—to elevate the audiophile experience together.

Question
Is the headband padding going to be replaceable? Over time it's generally the padding on this type of design that I end up replacing or swapping out for an aftermarket solution (Sennheisers were pretty friendly in that regard and other brands have suspension headbands you can replace). I found the Panda's headband to be lacking but couldn't really do much with it since the band was generally too thick top to bottom but also too narrow front to back to wrap an aftermarket solution around. Edit: I read a Reddit comment that stated the cushion snaps together and it should be replaceable with aftermarket options.

Question
Will there be a 4 pin XLR balanced cable available for this? Alternatively, if I were to order one from another company, would I want a single sided cable, TRRRS (4 pole?) 2.5mm to 4 pin XLR? It's important for me to get it right, as my main amp (Nitsch DSHA-3FN) is balanced only, and any mis-wiring of the cable could short out the amp! That would not be good...

There’s a spot on the lower mids where the OAE1 seems (for my ears) to have less volume than the HD 6xx/650, not enough to be a problem and it doesn’t have weird timbre either IMO. The HD 800 upper mids (~6 kHz) and treble is louder/more forward than the OAE1’s, but I actually feel the OAE1 is easier to listen to longer due to that, and there is more “air” in the OAE1 than the HD 6xx/650. I think detail is closely related to how well you can separate multiple instruments playing simultaneously (and the tiny cues that make soundstage and imaging more believable), the HD 800 may have a slight edge here but it might be hard to tell without comparing side to side; they both have a trait of allowing me to focus on something without straining to concentrate, while HD 650/6xx sounds more busy. it’s absolutely amazing how much the price has dropped on the Arya. I couldn’t tell what year vintage it was, but I saw an Amazon return up for bid two weeks ago for a stupid cheap price… I impulse bid on it for a bit, but because I didn’t know if a driver had failed or if QC had missed a short, I didn’t bid much, and I let it go once it was past my “impulse buy” range… it sold for $84 (local pickup). Thus, I still haven’t heard an Arya 😅 I have an HD 599 too, it’s great for meditative yoga background sound and I’ve pretty much donated it to my mom for that purpose, but by comparison the OAE1 will seem like someone (Axel Grell) washed away all the mud and brought the soundstage into clearer focus.
