However with new ear pads you can lose some of the close up in your face bass which is great if they're too much for you stock. They're some seriously amazing headphones. In my opinion, with the mahoganies and ebony's being lesser in the bass department, adding thicker pads can weaken the bass too much. The PH's allow you to have the best of both worlds.
If you want to go all out, you can mod them to have detachable cables and buy aftermarket Lawtons Cups in a ton of different wood finishes which are twice as think and look stunning however add another $500usd to the price.
I have a detachable cable mod already, now I'm trying to convince myself that a $45 modification is worth it. And I am pretty happy with the stock pads on my ebonies, and either don't want to change the original sound signature by changing them.
I've tested them with a cheap Fiio DAP, Onboard sound, my Soundblaster E5 and also Shiit combo. They are not a hard set of headphones to drive at all and a phone will get them plenty loud enough.
I love the bass extension, thick and fun sound signature. Though I would be happy to increase the detail and control, I don't want to loose the thick sound. That's why I am asking about this modification just everywhere :)
How do the new cups go? Any significant change?
I was about to pull the trigger on the sissoo wood cups from lawton but the $500usd price tag held me back. I think it's mostly an aesthetic change which for me... doesn't justify costing more than the units themselves
