Mixing in headphones just became possible for real!
I've been making music in Pro Tools for a long time, in bands and by myself. Over the past couple of years I've gotten a lot more serious about my solo work and have been putting a lot of time and effort into making quality recordings. However, I am stuck in headphones for mixing, which has always been a huge problem. I can usually wind up with OK sounding mixes, but it's always a struggle.
Not anymore! Immediately after opening a session and putting these glorious headphones on I could hear the difference. I pretty quickly got pulled into my song and before I knew it had been going for hours. Not only can I hear every little detail a million times better than before (and with such wonderfully pleasant tone) but my ears weren't dripping with sweat and my head didn't feel like I had a fever. Nor did I feel like I didn't want to listen to music again for a long time, which tended to happen with all previous headphones. Much of this relief is due to the headphones being open back, of course, but with such quality of sound at the same time, I'm really blown away. No ear fatigue at all. Not to mention, they just feel nice and comfy on my head. I was a bit worried because I'd read some others say they felt really tight at first, but that hasn't been my experience. They're nice and light as well, without feeling cheap.
Best of all however, is the results of mixing with these. I've been able to put together really good mixes in 1/20th the time it took to get mediocre mixes before. With only slight variances, the way it sounds in the phones translates quite precisely to the real world. I usually just have to make tiny tweaks to adjust the difference, which for me is downright amazing. And the more I use them, the more I just understand the little level changes that I know will be a tad different on speakers.
Bottom line, I couldn't be happier. Thank you Drop and Sennheiser for making these crazy amazing quality headphones for such a crazy low price! If there's anyone else out there like me that can't use monitors to mix, and are looking for headphones to do the job...look no further!
