Compatibility with Fixed Length Poles? Would love to take this on a bikepacking trip. Trouble is I don't carry trekking poles. I do have some Big Agnes adjustable tarp poles, but they only go out to 42" which I suspect is not long enough. Curious if this is compatible with 'fixed length' poles such as the Six Moons carbon fiber tent poles which are available in 45" or 49"? Thanks!

uber_franzA 5 section pole is nice (so it packs short) and 47" is about the right length. 48" works as well but you have to angle it a bit more. A nice light option are the carbon ones from Zpacks because they have a 5 section, 48" option and you could always hacksaw it an inch shorter is you wanted. Light at 2.5oz each. $29 ea. http://www.zpacks.com/accessories/tent_pole.shtml If you care about price moreso than weight and packed size, then TarpTent has 4 section alumimum ones for a low price ($16 ea). IMO, I'd spent an extra $13 to have them lighter and pack smaller. https://www.tarptent.com/product/vertical-support-pole/ The Ruta Locura ones are the Cadillac of the poles since you can get them adjustable and custom made, but more expensive. Not sure if they do 5 section. http://www.rutalocura.com/tent_pole_450.html

dandurstonHi Dan, Will those zpacks poles work despite not having a tip to hook into the grommet? Thanks!

arthastIt's hard to say for certain without actually seeing them, but you don't need to use the grommets on the X-Mid. You can pitch it with poles tip up in the grommet, or handle up not using the grommet. I think the Zpacks tents are always handle up. The peaks of the X-Mid are reinforced with a 210D nylon fabric, which I think it is at least as beefy as what Zpacks is using to reinforce the inside of their peaks, so if these poles are dull/blunt enough not to damage the peaks of the Zpacks tents, then they should also be fine in the X-Mid.

arthastHi arthast, I don't use trekking poles and am looking at the same Zpacks poles. Because I live in Europe I'll have to pay quite some extra for these (import and custom fees, etc.) and any return shipping costs will be very expensive, so I really have to be certain beforehand. Looks like it should work though, but just to be sure I just emailed Zpacks support with this same question and a link to the X-Mid video @ 4:24. I'll let you know as soon as I get their reply.

arthastI got a reply from Zpacks today: Yes, you are correct, the ends of our poles do not have a pointed end that would fit into a grommet. The ends each have rubber caps. The 210D peak reinforcement should be plenty tough to support the poles. I'm ordering mine soon so I'll have them ready when the tent ships end of May :)
