Very happy to receive my tent today. If it wasn't for the constant rain I'd be setting it up right now. Unfortunately I had to pay over $100 for duty and taxes because I live in Canada. I really wish massdrop wouldn't ship with DHL since I always get dinged huge fees with them on any massdrop item that has shipped through them. I recently read on this site about people wanting a massdrop.ca and I'm one of them. Especially frustrating since Dan is Canadian... rant over.

KnuckledusterYeah this does suck. There's been a few posts on here digging into it. It looks like the actual fee ($10) wasn't that bad, and the tax (~12%) is normal, but then apparently Canada has a 17% tariff on tents that is supposed to be applied regardless of who's importing it (e.g. Canada Post or a courier). Usually these packages slip through because processing person doesn't know all the possible tariffs, but apparently someone with a keen knowledge of Canada's tariffs was on the job when these came through. So there's a chance it would have been the same outcome with Canada Post (since the extra cost is tariff and not handling/brokerage fees) but it does suck for sure.

KnuckledusterAgreed. The brokerage fee was only $10, but its basically an added shipping fee on top of tarifs and taxes. You'd think that shipping and the initial charges would've covered all but duty and hst.

dandurstonThe cost breakdown was provided on delivery. There is a $10 brokerage fee associated with the shipment. Given total cost, not a lot but you don't expect to pay more shipping fees after you've bought the product. As a canadian, i accept that there will be duty costs and hst added (which was most of the added expense), but ive never had canada post or usps parcel charge me brokerage fees. Would be nice if dhl wasnt used for that reason, but am pumped to have it nonetheless.
AHotJacksonI talked to the CBSA folks today at the federal government to get some more insight into this, but basically almost all of the fees are the result of the federal government and they would apply regardless of the shipping method. There's some more info on that here: https://www.massdrop.com/buy/massdrop-x-dan-durston-x-mid-1p-tent/talk/2404631 The $10 fee is indeed a fee but the rest of it is sales tax (PST/GST/HST) plus an 18% tariff Canada has imposed on non-domestic tents of 18%. So it's really the federal governments fault because this money is going to them - it's not like DHL tacked on much in the way of their own fees. The same thing can happen via Canada Post, as many folks including myself have been charged this same tariff via Canada Post (I got stung about 10 years ago with an MSR tent coming in). With any method though it's a gamble as to whether the 18% tariff actually gets charged. Quite often the border officers are too busy on unknowledagable to apply duties. So it looks like it's the federal governments fault, but also unlucky that they were on the ball here because a lot of tents coming into Canada don't dinged. The next batch might slip through without the duty but it's a risk.

dandurstonI looked into the wording of the CPTPP and there is something about goods going though another country not part of the partnership not being tariff free unless they remain under customs control or something like that. So the fact that they stop as Massdrop makes them inelegable for tariff free status. It looks like the person you contacted at CBSA is correct. Too bad... MSR uses a distributor in Kamloops. I imagine they get tariff free stuff shipped directly there for the Canadian market. Massdrop could do the same. I remember an outdoor store owner I know complaining about tariffs on brands such as MSR many years ago. Now I get it. Anyway, thanks for your work on this Dan.
