I purchased the 20 degree option last time around and even when using a Thermarest Neo-air xlite pad, I was almost shivering when it was fifty degrees out. I had to purchase a 45 degree summer bag to supplement it. With the second bag I'm comfortable down into the twenties.

DumpTruckWas that your first quilt?
I like completely sewn bottom & footbox because I sleep super cold. This open quilt is great for people who sleep warm and want the option to vent (I never do below 60!) From my research on EE quilts, it seems like EEs 20 quilt should roughly correspond to an EN *comfort* (aka womens) rating of 30, and 21? For lower limit (men's). That would be with wearing base layers and a down balaclava, which is basically a substitute for a sleeping bag hood.
Something is definitely wrong if you are shivering at 50 in a 20 degree quilt. (Assuming you normally find bag temps accurate. I always add 15F to rating because I sleep cold) I would inspect the quilt to make sure you have down in all the baffles. If all is well there, then post on backpackinglight etc for feedback on your sleep system. Good luck! Shivering is no fun!!

DumpTruckAgree with the point about something being wrong if you're shivering at 50. I have a 50F quilt from Big Agnes that I've used down to the low 30s. I wear a warm layer of clothing, add a puffy, socks, & fleece beanie, and, depending on how cold, a bag liner that adds up to 20 degrees. I've slept down to the low 40s without the bag liner, even almost getting too warm. I use a combo pad system of a foam mat (Mammut Alpine UL) and an inflatable. In the 40s, I use a pad with a 1.4 R value, and any colder I use one that is 4 something.

DumpTruckI completely agree! I own a 20 degree EE Convert which is more a true sleeping bag...not a quilt. I was shivering in 45 degree temps. I was wearing socks, thermo Capilene 3 top and bottoms and a Rab Xenon jacket. I was amazed at how cold I was. Make sure to buy the warmest EE sells. I wish I had.
