Given Chinese companies general disregard for intellectual property, I wonder how long it will be before exact copies of the Revelation are being sold on Ali. Guess that's EE's problem but I must say I'm surprised they agreed to this.

AY1286It's a fair concern. But it's also on us as buyers to vote with our wallets on things like quality warranty and customer support and a commitment to responsibly-sourced down.

TexasDevinDefinitely. It was worth the extra $50 for me to order directly through EE when I ordered mine last year.

Yeah, this design was stolen years ago.
And here is Tim Marshall's response:
" It’s no problem. I don’t have any problem talking about this thing. Just wish they wouldn’t try to claim the design as original. Every good idea I ever had had been copied, I’m not done by any means and I’m sure I’ll be around long after “wind hard tiny” retires. "

BrianCeeI've seen that quilt before, it's an obviously inferior copy. I guess what I meant was the practice of one quilt going out the front door bearing the EE logo and another going out the back, still bearing the EE logo or something similar. You can find what are essentially Big Agnes tents etc on there as well complete with their hub pole design that I can only imagine cost a lot in development. My main point is that I don't see how manufacturing one quilt in the USA by hand and manufacturing another in China same design same name doesn't lessen the value of the brand, especially considering that you've given a factory your design and hoping they don't just do their own thing with it.

AY1286For me, simply having a product made in China doesn't diminish the value of the brand, and I think most people follow that same logic. If it were true that manufacturing overseas diminishes a brand's value, Apple wouldn't be one of the most successful companies in the world. Sure, the factory has the design, but I've taken a rectangular sleeping bag and had it cut down into a quilt just looking at pictures of quilts, so it's not like they need to be handed specs to copy something.
Mass production simply gives consumers another option - at the end of the day, if people don't want one that is made in China, they will go directly through EE. I actually intended to get a quilt in this drop, but decided that for a little bit more money, I could get EXACTLY what I wanted with respect to temp ratings, size, and color (plus, I wanted the Enigma for my cold weather bag), so I ordered directly from EE. I still appreciate that this drop is an option, though. It's simply another choice for consumers, and I think it gives EE an opportunity to try mass production without making a significant change in their made-to-order process.
